Climbing to fame through Twitch streamers and content creators, GeoGuessr is a browser based geography game which shows you a location and prompts you to guess where you are based on your surroundings. A Steam edition of the title has just been listed, but the big question is whether or not this new edition will require users to pay a monthly subscription to play, similar to its browser version.
For those unfamiliar with GeoGuessr, the geography-based puzzle game drops you in a random location using Google Street View. Explore the location around you, using clues like street signs, landmarks, or whatever else you have at your disposal to guess where in the world you are. The closer your guess is to the actual location, the more points you earn. Until now, GeoGuessr has been primarily browser-based, however, with a mobile version available, too.

In a Steam news post on Tuesday March 25, which dropped alongside the game’s official Steam listing, the developer states that GeoGuessr Steam Edition is coming soon. Despite not having a confirmed release date, the page states that GeoGuessr is set to launch in April, and will feature ranked Solo Duels as well as unranked Team Duels. It’s clear that GeoGuessr is attempting to make the game more competitive and social.
If you’re currently playing GeoGuessr on browser, you’ll incur a monthly subscription fee of $3.99 / £3.99 to unlock the ‘Pro’ version of the game and access all of the features. While there is a free edition, it’s limited, allowing you to access only three locations per day. There’s no way to purchase the game in its entirety, despite fans constantly asking for this to be implemented.
With a Steam Edition finally being announced, this could finally be a subscription-free version of GeoGuessr, perhaps replacing the monthly cost with a one-time purchase.
While there’s no official release date, GeoGuessr is set to launch in April 2025. You can currently wishlist it on Steam right now.
