Assassin’s Creed Shadows Releases New Update

Assassin's Creed Shadows Releases New Update

Summary

  • The first Assassin’s Creed Shadows hotfix update focuses on stabilization and fixing Photo mode glitches.
  • Reviews praised the game’s open world and gameplay variety, but some scored lower due to different issues.
  • Ubisoft may continue refining the game with future patches following the latest 8.88GB hotfix.

Ubisoft has released the first Assassin’s Creed Shadows hotfix update. The latest entry in the Assassin’s Creed series launched across all major platforms late last week, earning glowing reviews and high player counts despite multiple pre-launch controversies. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set in feudal Japan, where an African-born samurai named Yasuke and a female Shinobi named Naoe join forces on a journey that ties into the age-old battle between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order.

So far, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been praised for its impressively rendered open-world and mixed gamplay, which lets players choose between the traditional Assassin’s Creed stealth favored by Naoe or a more direct, strength-based approach while playing as Yasuke. Not every review has been positive, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ review scores have fallen short of some of the more beloved entries in the long-running historical action franchise.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Is More Rise of the Ronin Than Ghost of Tsushima

While Assassin’s Creed Shadows has long been compared to Ghost of Tsushima, it’s more like Rise of the Ronin in its gameplay and worldbuilding.

Despite this, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is being regarded as a solid new addition to the Assassin’s Creed series, and the developers at Ubisoft Quebec will likely continue to refine the game following its launch through downloadable updates. The first of these hotfixes was just released earlier today, though there isn’t much in the way of new changes. This patch is only 8.88GB, and the patch notes only list three major bullet points.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Update 1.01 Patch Notes

  • Stabilization – Fixed some global issues
  • [PS5] Fixed a Photo mode issue that could cause a crash when fetching photos to display on the world map.
  • [PC] Fixed a Photo mode issue that could cause a crash when taking a photo.

In addition to stabilizing some global issues, this Assassin’s Creed update fixes a glitch in the Photo mode on PlayStation 5, where the game could crash while the player fetches photos to display on the world map. Another Photo mode issue is addressed on the PC version of the game, though this one caused crashes while simply trying to take a photo.

While this is the first post-launch Assassin’s Creed Shadows hotfix update patch, it isn’t the first update overall. Shortly before the game went live on March 20, Ubisoft quietly released an update that removed the player’s ability to damage shrines and temples in the game world after controversy over these acts reached all the way up to the Prime Minister of Japan. There will likely be even more Assassin’s Creed Shadows update patches released in the future, as it has become common practice for developers to iron out issues in big triple-A titles.
