The Boys prequel series Vought Rising is on its way, and fans look forward to more engaging characters and dark humor. Although fans don’t know every detail just yet, Vought Rising will star Aya Cash and Jensen Ackles as Stormfront/Clara Vought in 1950s New York City dealing with a “murder mystery.” Variety repored March 2025 that Will Hochman was cast, and it’s exciting to imagine what this world could look like.
The Boys season 5 is also on its way, although there is no release date just yet. In the meantime, since Gen V is such a impressive spinoff, hopes are high for Vought Rising. It’s also the perfect time to think about the strongest prequels out there. The Walking Dead prequel Fear The Walking Dead stands out among the crowd since it offers up some key details about the zombie apocalypse that started it all. Could The Boys prequel Vought Rising take some inspiration from it?

Fear The Walking Dead Did These Two Things Perfectly And So Could The Boys Prequel Vought Rising
The Walking Dead season 1 told a perfect and succinct story with only six episodes, and the prequel Fear The Walking Dead followed in its footsteps. While the show’s other seasons were longer, with season 2 having 15 episodes, season 18 had 12, which is fairly short when compared to network dramas. The Boys prequel Vought Rising needs to pack a lot of action, story, and character developments into shorter seasons. Since The Boys has so many strong episodes, fans can expect the prequel to be just as dark, impressive, and surprising.
The Boys prequel should also include fan-favorite characters. Fear The Walking Dead introduced new characters like Alicia Clark (Alycia Debnam-Carey) but also featured Morgan Jones (Lennie James), who Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) meets near the beginning of The Walking Dead. While it’s great to become invested in new characters with their hopes, goals, and objectives, seeing familiar faces is comforting. Grimes appeared in Fear The Walking Dead season 4, which was exciting. Although fans saw the tough yet kind leader again in the spinoff The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, it was still great seeing him interact with the other characters on the prequel.
Vought Rising is already doing this by telling a new story about Stormfront and Soldier Boy. Viewers already know them and will definitely tune in to see the next phase of their journeys. But Vought Rising also needs to include cameos from stars such as Jack Quaid who plays Hughie Campbell and Karl Urban who plays Billy Butcher. The 1950s setting might make it tricky to feature certain characters, but the show can fix that issue by using storytelling devices such as flash-forwards or dreams/nightmares. Or perhaps some of The Boys actors could play different characters. Even if they aren’t portraying the heroes and villains that fans know well, viewers would still appreciate seeing them.
Fear The Walking Dead blends the familiar zombie apocalypse story with new details about how this came to be while ensuring that new characters are as compelling and courageous as The Walking Dead characters. It was smart to center The Boys prequel around Stormfront and Soldier Boy since they’re so compelling, too. Jensen Ackles is also known for portraying Dean Winchester in 15 seasons of Supernatural, a character who is very different from Soldier Boy. Although Dean famously trashes a hotel room in one memorable episode, he’s inherently good and much less mysterious than Soldier Boy. In an interview with Men’s Health, Ackles said:
“Soldier Boy certainly lines up in that kind of framework, in that he thinks he’s doing what needs to be done. He thinks he’s walking the right walk, when in actuality, he’s just terribly mistaken. He thinks that he’s the hero, when he’s really horribly broken and is clearly the antagonist.”
What Did The Showrunner Say About The Boys Prequel Vought Rising?
Vought Rising was announced in July 2024 and executive producer Paul Grellong and showrunner Eric Kripke talked about the series at Comic-Con. According to Variety, they said:
“It’s a twisted murder mystery about the origins of Vought in the 1950s, the early exploits of Soldier Boy, and the diabolical maneuvers of a Supe known to fans as Stormfront, who was then going by the name Clara Vought.”
Also in July 2024, Kripke talked about Vought Rising with Variety and said he talked to Amazon about wanting to do two The Boys spinoffs: Vought Rising and Gen V. Amazon said Gen V could be the first spinoff and Kripke explained, “they said, ‘Let’s start with “Gen V,”‘ and we’ll see how it goes and then maybe we’ll do ‘Rising.’ It turns out it went OK.” Kripke also described Vought Rising as:
“like L.A. Confidential with superheroes, is just going to be super fun. And Jensen and Aya, they’re superstars. They’re gonna blow the doors off.”
