Suitable Flesh

A young psychiatrist named Elizabeth Derby becomes obsessed with helping a young patient who seems to be suffering from an extreme personality disorder. In an effort to find out more about her patient and get closer, she ends up uncovering an occult, trying to escape a horrific fate.

It’s a little slow at first, but overall, an enjoyable movie and has a great cast. It’s reminiscent of the campy 80s horror, where the movie itself isn’t the greatest, but that’s what makes it so good. It’s camp.

Heather Graham in particular delivers an exceptional performance, making her descent into madness all the more terrifying. The film is directed by Joe Lynch, who is also known for his insane movie Mayhem, which stars Steven Yeun and Samara Weaving.

Psycho Goreman

We all love the story of E.T., the adorable alien that made human friends and healed families in the process. Psycho Goreman, however, completely turns that story on its head. Sibling duo Mimi and Luke discover a strange, glowing amulet while digging in their garden that unexpectedly resurrects an alien overlord.

Due to having the amulet, the alien is forced to give into each of their childish whims—until his intergalactic friends and enemies decide to track down where the overlord is and get back the amulet. The special effects are amazing and all done practically, which adds another certain charm to this film that you can’t find anywhere else.

Get Away

2024

Get Away is like Midsommer and The Village got mixed together. Featuring Shaun Of The Dead star Nick Frost, who plays the patriarch Richard Smith, the film follows the Smith family’s journey to the Swedish island of Svälta to participate in a village tradition called Karantan.

But since this is a horror movie, things don’t go as they should. There are some great comedic elements in the film, which helps when it comes from a veteran like Frost, and towards the end of the movie the blood and guts really stick to the landing, making it an enjoyable horror film to indulge in.

Only Come The Wolves

For horror, there’s no better setting than deep, scary woods where nobody can hear you scream. And in Only Come The Wolves, it brings horror back to its roots. On a weekend hunting trip, Sophie and her fiancé, Nolan, along with their friend Kyle, are forced to confront their primal instincts when forced to survive against a pack of wolves.

There’s an underlying tension between the group due to Kyle’s lingering feelings for Sophie, and it’s an interesting dynamic once things start to go badly on the hunting trip. We also get to see Sophie’s personal journey as she goes from being a pacifist to a bona fide hero. The film does a great job at showing off Sophie’s growth and makes her a character worth rooting for.

Watcher

Starring Maika Monroe, Watcher is a psychological horror film that keeps you on your toes and second guessing the entire time. After American couple Julia and Francis relocate to Bucharest, tensions begin to rise the more that Julia is left to her own devices. Through her large apartment window, Francis begins to become more aware of the fact that she might be the victim of stalking.

She notices a man starting to watch her from across the street, all while a serial killer named The Spider torments the city. Like most psychological horror films, it’s extremely slow and tends to drag, leaving a lot of ambiguity for the viewer. There’s a lot of build up, with Julia trying to uncover what’s goining on all while dealing with the intense loneliness of living in a city where she doesn’t know anybody besides her husband. But if you can sit with it, the film is well worth a watch.

Exhuma

Horror characters need to learn that nothing good comes from messing with the dead—especially for the characters in the South-Korean film Exhuma. Famous Korean shaman Hwa-rim and her protégé, Bong-gil are hired by a wealthy Korean American family, who specializes in real estate development, to identify a mysterious illness of the family’s newborn son. Hwa-rim soon uncovers the curse to be a “Grave’s Call”, a vengeful ancestor’s spirit haunting them, and deadly consequences soon follow as they find what’s buried underneath the grave.

Like most Korean horror films, this is certainly one of the most terrifying movies on the list. Due to the film diving into the occult and curses that Korea heeds caution to, it adds a certain element not typically showcased in American horror films, which makes for a great watch.

Peninsula

When Train To Busan was released in 2016, it exploded in popularity across the world. From South Korean audiences to American viewers, fans were astonished by the gripping and heartbreaking storyline as well as the innovative twist on the zombie genre. And in 2020, fans finally got a sequel to this blockbuster hit.

Four years after the initial outbreak in Train To Busan, the virus has now spread from end-to-end in South Korea. Now, a former Marine captain named Jung-seok, along with a group of other survivors, decides to embark on a suicide mission to locate a truck carrying $20 million in cash. Unfortunately, zombies aren’t the only thing that they have to worry about, as the group must battle dangerous mercenaries who are also after the money.

Peninsula is a decent sequel that caters to fans of action-packed zombie shooters; the action is ramped up to a ten and the characters are just as charming as the Train To Busan cast.

Horror is a wonderful genre that isn’t just limited to live-action. The Spine Of Night showcases horror in a different element: animation. Using rotoscope animation, the film follows a centuries-long journey of a magical plant that inspires those who stumble upon it to rise into power, only for black magic to stain its user and battle a malevolent force.

Due to the beautiful animation, the film has some amazing sequences with even better voice acting. The best thing about this film is it is able to explore some horror sequences that might be hard for a live-action film to achieve, leading to a whole new world of terrifying sequences. The cast is also pretty stacked, including Richard E. Grant as The Guardian and Lucy Lawless as the witch-queen Tzod.
