Rocket League Players Want Controversial Tesla Vehicle Removed

Summary

  • A Reddit user has called for the removal of the Cybertruck because of the controversial head of Tesla, Elon Musk.
  • A sizeable number of commenters agree, but others say the request is frivolous given the game’s more pressing problems.
  • The actual Cybertruck has just faced a major recall.

Rocket League has a long history of crossovers and collaborations. Last year, an in-game version of Tesla’s Cybertruck was released in partnership with the electric vehicle manufacturer. The skin is for the game’s hybrid body type – the same body type as the Venom which every player has unlocked by default.

If you’ve been following the politics of the United States over the past year, you’ll likely be aware of the rising political profile of Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla, owner of Twitter and de-facto head of the new Department of Government Efficiency. Musk has proven especially controversial in recent years, recently being accused of performing a stiff-arm salute at an inaugural event in Washington. This salute is most commonly associated with the Nazi Party, a German political movement which committed atrocious crimes against humanity in the years before and during World War 2.

Crossover Calamity

In a thread on Reddit, user Legitimate_Mud_5480 called for the removal of the Cybertruck because of Elon Musk, writing “It’s become a symbol for fascism and the company who makes Cybertrucks has not removed their CEO who has pledged allegiance publicly to a hate group.”

The post has over 8,000 upvotes, but the comments are divided. Several commenters say the Cybertruck should be removed because it’s difficult to tell when someone is facing forwards or backwards, rather than for any political reasons: “I personally hate the Cybertruck because my blind ass can’t tell if my teammates are facing forwards or backwards when they use it,” writes anonshade64.

There are also those arguing that a cosmetic in a video game isn’t where people should focus their political ire. “I got to say, if someone using a stupid skin is enough to ruin matches for you, life must be very difficult,” writes NotAGreatScientist, “Man, I hate Musk but who really cares bro,” concurs ThatBoiYoshi.

Ironically, using the Cybertruck in Rocket League might be the only way to drive one for the foreseeable future. Tesla recently recalled the majority of Cybertrucks due to reports of the car’s side panels falling off unexpectedly. This is the eighth recall of the Cybertruck in the model’s short history.
