Hero Academy school system, while the few that choose life as a villain are often left to join a criminal society.
Dabi’s role in My Hero Academia is a painful one, as the side he ended up on wasn’t a chosen one, but one forced upon him. His Blueflame quirk would have been a power that benefited the side of good, but his backstory led him down another path. Despite his reckless intent and crazed demeanor, Dabi is well-grounded and calculative, and Blueflame could be one of the strongest quirks that the side of good has dealt with.

A Quirk That Burns The Body Relentlessly
Dabi’s Quirk “Blueflame” Creates Immeasurable Heat
First Appearance |
Episode 41 “Kota” |

Affiliated with the League of Villains, Dabi’s role in My Hero Academia isn’t made aware of until a flashback to his childhood is shown in Episode 23, “Shoto Todoroki: Origin”. In Episode 31, “The Aftermath of Hero Killer: Stain”, Dabi is revealed as the Blueflame quirk user, introducing a new threat to the U.A. heroes. In just a few moments of his reveal, Dabi comes off as cerebral, and possesses powers similar to Shoto Todoroki and Endeavor.
Not only is Dabi’s Blueflame similar to Endeavor’s Hellflame, it’s the same quirk, but with minor differences. Dabi’s quirk burns fire from within his body, expelling it out as a flame and usable in battle. Unlike Endeavor, Dabi’s Blueflame burns blue instead of red, indicating a higher velocity of heat and power. Emitting the flame, Dabi can not only cloak himself in fire, but use it as a weapon and shield from incoming attacks.
Blueflame’s Main Drawback
Firepower At The Cost Of Mental And Physical Anguish
As described by both Endeavor and Todoroki, the emitter quirk using flame has the ability to grant significant power, but at a cost. The flame itself burns the user’s body, but with special training, the damage can be minimized. Depending on how much the user emits, the body can be burned at any moment if too much fire is used. In Dabi’s case, his reckless behavior and inability to control the flame left him with severe burns.
Through many flashbacks, Dabi’s role in My Hero Academia turns from a hero with amazing potential to a true villain with a black heart. Serving the Todoroki family as the eldest son, Dabi was abused and neglected by his father, Endeavor, who showed more interest in the abilities of Shoto. In doing so, Dabi’s mental state became affected, causing him to lose control of his powers and build a negative outlook on life.

My Hero Academia: Did Dabi Feel Remorse For His Actions After The Final War?
Dabi ultimately stems from his parents’ neglect and abuse. After the Final War, does Dabi feel any remorse as the family reunites?
Paired with a weakened mental state and a thirst for revenge, Dabi’s Blueflame quirk became highly unstable. Not only did his body become severely burned, leaving scars all over his face and body, but the quirk itself became uncontrollably stronger. Upon losing grip, Dabi shows little care for the damage Blueflame does to his body, instead focusing on maximizing the damage he can cause to his target and, most importantly, his family.
Blueflame’s Applications In Battle
Dabi’s Versatile Quirk Provides Offense And Defense
Studying the Blueflame quirk on its positives, it’s quite versatile in its ability to provide both offense and defense. Known as one of the strongest emitter quirks in My Hero Academia, Dabi can expel high amounts of flame at his intended target. Doing so at rapid speeds, it’s difficult for those caught in the blast range to avoid its heat. Over the years, Dabi has created various ultimate moves that utilize his Blueflame quirk:
- Flashfire Fist: Endeavor’s signature technique, passed down to Dabi. Raising his fire’s temperatur to the maximum level, Dabi increases his power to unleash flame attacks that are much faster than his normal usage.
- Hell Spider: Firing numerous streams of fire from his fingers, Dabi’s usage of this technique is less precise than his father’s technique.
- Jet Burn: Dabi blasts a large wave of fire towards his target that is nearly impossible to dodge. He has the ability to use this technique with and without making physical contact.
- Prominence Burn: Reaching his maximum output of strength and speed, Dabi fires a highly-concentrated beam of fire that can eviscerate anything in its path.
- Phosphor: A stolen technique from Shot’s ultimate move, Phospor revitalizes his own power and powers it up at the same time.
- Hell Minefield: A technique that forces flames to explode from the ground up, hitting unsuspecting targets in his way.
- Vanishing Fist: A high-risk, high-reward technique that launches a fist-like blast of fire, but at the cost of exploding a part of the user’s body.
Dabi’s Blueflame isn’t all offense, as he has shown the ability to defend against attacks, and assist his League of Villains team members to escape from battle. With his creation of walls of fire, Dabi can enter a battle and trap his opponents from escaping, while avoiding any contact with targets. This gives Dabi the perfect combination of unmatched power with unbreakable defense.
If you’re trash, at least burn and be kindling for me.
It’s worth noting that Dabi’s Blueflame quirk is highly dependent on his mental state at any given point. In a calm and calculative mindset, Dabi has shown incredible strategic poise that has helped him and his allies turn the tables on their targets. In a weakened mental state, Dabi becomes careless with the power output he uses, and the allies that may get caught up in his blast range. For that, the unstable nature is a double-edged sword for Blueflame’s usage.
