Summary
- Even though Patch 8 hasn’t been released yet, fans are already hoping that Larian will release another one afterward.
- Larian has said that Patch 8 is the game’s final major patch, but this isn’t the first time the studio has falsely claimed this.
- Fans want more story content, even though these additions are unlikely.
Larian Studios hasn’t released Patch 8 yet, but some fans are already filing away their requests for a hypothetical Patch 9. Although Patch 8 is intended to be Baldur’s Gate 3‘s final update, Larian previously claimed it was stopping production, only to turn around and announce more updates shortly after. As a result, there are some Baldur’s Gate 3 players hoping that Larian might have more left in the tank after Patch 8.
Patch 8 is already a substantial update, adding cross-play between platforms, photo mode, and a new subclass for each of the game’s existing classes. No doubt there are more additions in the patch that Larian has yet to announce. Patch 8 is in closed testing and doesn’t currently have a release date.
Story, Story, Story
However, a Reddit user named El_cocacolas is hopeful that Larian will release additional updates after Patch 8. To that effect, they created a thread, polling the community on what they would most like to see in any additional updates. The original poster themselves requests additional spells, races, and customisation options. The comments, however, are all asking for the same thing: more story content.
The rationale here is sound. As LegendOfJulle points out, mods can “scratch the itch” for a lot of requests, but story content involving the game’s original characters is something only Larian can accomplish.
“I think I would only get actually excited about story content,” writes Express_Accident2329. “Player character options I expect will eventually get covered by modders with the worst-case scenario being janky animations.”
Included in these general story requests are calls for Larian to add additional content for underrepresented characters, such as Wyll and Halsin. As GothWitchOfBrooklyn points out, “Halsin has basically nothing to do in Act 3. Even a couple of interactions with Act 3 stuff would be interesting.”
Halsin wasn’t originally intended to be a companion in Baldur’s Gate 3 but Larian added him because of how popular he was with early access players. This is a partial explanation for why Halsin’s story content seems to taper off after Act 2.
“Fixes and expansions for Wyll’s story. He has great potential,” comments Snowymagnus. Indeed, several comments have asked for additional Wyll content, with a common complaint in the community being that Wyll has very little content compared to other origin companions.
There’s certainly a chance that Larian releases additional updates after Patch 8, but with two games in active development at the studio, this possibility seems more remote than it used to be. Adding more story content is also very labour intensive, and Larian is probably ready to move on from writing additional content for Baldur’s Gate 3.
