In Age of Mythology: Retold, units are crucial, and without proper upgrades, defeating enemy forces will be challenging. The more upgrades you apply, the stronger your units become, with improved stats and occasionally new abilities. All these upgrades combined significantly enhance your units.

Here’s a brief primer to learning the ins and outs of Age of Mythology: Retold.

Some upgrades completely enhance a specific unit or unit type, while others provide bonuses to multiple units. Various upgrades can also change the appearance and name of your units. This guide will help you understand how to upgrade your units and which specific units you can upgrade.

How To Upgrade Units

To upgrade your units, you need to advance at least to the Classical Age. This allows you to enhance your units through specific buildings. Upgrading a specific unit or units of a certain type will change their appearance and name, and increase all their stats. You can upgrade both mythological units and human soldiers.

Some unit upgrades are the same across all pantheons. Just as you always upgrade your myth units at the Temple and your warships at the Dock, human soldier upgrades vary depending on the pantheon.

Additionally, you can improve your units by researching various upgrades from your Armory, Temple, or other military buildings. Some upgrades will not change the name or appearance of your units but will enhance their stats and make them more effective against enemies.

Before starting the game, click on the god you want to choose from the Tech Tree tab above. Then, scroll the bar below to view the upgrades. While in the game, you will see circular buttons in the top right corner. Press the third button to view the Tech Tree and plan accordingly.

Greek pantheon gods can upgrade their mythological units from the Temple. Additionally, because Greek military buildings are divided into three types, you can also upgrade your human units from the Military Academy, Archery Range, and Stables.

All Egyptian Pantheon Unit Upgrades

Egyptian pantheon gods can upgrade their military units from the Barracks once they reach the Classical Age. Since the Barracks features three different types of military units, you will need to perform separate upgrades for each.

Additionally, after advancing to the Heroic Age, you can construct a Midgod Stronghold, where you will be able to upgrade units such as Elephants, Camel Riders, and Chariots.

The Norse have fewer military buildings and unit types compared to other pantheons. You can upgrade your infantry units from the Longhouse. After advancing to the Heroic Age, you can build the Great Hall to upgrade your cavalry units.

If you’re playing as a major god from the Chinese pantheon, you can upgrade your infantry and ranged units at the Military Camp. Additionally, ranged units can also be upgraded at the Machine Workshop. You won’t be able to train cavalry until you advance to the Heroic Age. Once you do, you can train and upgrade cavalry at the Baolei.
