One of the latest updates introduced a new iconic location: the Laboratory, along with a new boss, Nikola Tesla. This update also brought new weapons, enemies, and mechanics that increase your chances of survival throughout the run, culminating in a final battle against the powerful boss himself.
Who Is Nikola Tesla In Dead Rails?
Nikola Tesla is the entity with the highest health in the game so far, with a total of 5800 HP. His summoning process is reminiscent of the Frankenstein story.
Tesla appears as a reanimated being built with werewolf limbs and a human brain, which is contained in a glass jar with the eyes still attached to the brain stem. He has an intimidating and menacing appearance and is one of the strongest enemies in the game.
Tesla deals 60 damage per hit to an unarmored player. If you are fully armored, each hit will be halved to around 30 HP damage.
He has a movement speed twice as fast as you, so running from him is not a viable strategy.
How To Summon Nikola Tesla
The ability to summon the boss Nikola Tesla isn’t automatic, you must trigger his appearance manually by completing a hidden ritual during your run.
The summoning is tied to a specific structure called the Tesla Lab, where you’ll need to gather materials, survive a deadly storm, and activate an elaborate machine to bring him to life.
Where To Find The Tesla Lab
To summon Nikola Tesla, you’ll need to follow a series of specific steps. During your Dead Rails run, as you progress along the map with your train, either solo or with friends, you may encounter the Tesla Laboratory. This structure can spawn between 20,000–30,000 or 50,000–60,000.
You’ll recognize the lab as a red brick building with windows and a large “Tesla” tower protruding from the middle of the structure.
The entrance is located on the side of the building. Once inside, you’ll find a surgical table, various electronic devices, junk, and valuable items.
Tesla Body Assembly
Inside the laboratory, your task is to find all the werewolf limbs and place them one by one on the surgical table, assembling Tesla’s body.
You’ll also find a jar containing a brain and two eyes. This is Tesla’s head. The item is valued at 250,000, which you could sell to purchase supplies, but doing so would make it impossible to summon Tesla for the final battle.
Powering The Storm
Once you’ve fully assembled Nikola Tesla’s body on the surgical table, head to the room to the right of the table. Inside, you’ll find a lever connected to a windmill and a charge meter.
You must activate the lever to begin a lightning storm, which will gradually power the mechanism. Once the storm is complete, Tesla will be fully summoned. His body will vanish from the table, leaving behind bonds and a special weapon called the Electrocutioner.
After pulling the lever to start the lightning storm, around 30 to 40 zombies dressed in lab coats and scientist uniforms will spawn in waves. They will continue to appear until the storm has finished charging.
Inside Tesla’s lab, you’ll find lightning rods. These devices redirect the lightning and change the spawn location of the scientist zombies, who will appear in a radius around the rods. You can place these rods outside the building, making it easier to fight the zombies in open areas.
Where And When Tesla Appears
If you’ve reached the lab, assembled Tesla, and survived the lightning storm along with the scientist zombies, then you’ve successfully summoned Nikola Tesla. To confirm that the process was successful, check for two things.
- Tesla’s body will no longer be on the surgical table, and in its place, you’ll see werewolf-like footprints, an item drop, and scattered bonds. Once this is done, Nikola Tesla will appear as the final boss of the game.
Nikola Tesla does not appear in the lab itself. The lab is just the place where the summoning ritual takes place. This is not the final fight. The actual boss battle occurs at Kilometer 80, where you must fight to escape the map and complete the game.
When you reach Kilometer 80 in Dead Rails, you arrive at the final bandit fortress, the escape point to win the run. Here, you need to activate a lever that lowers the escape bridge, which takes four minutes to fully descend.
Normally, bandits and zombies will spawn and attempt to kill you during this time. However, if you summon Nikola Tesla, he will replace the zombie spawns and appear alongside the bandits, presenting a much more dangerous challenge if you’re not fully prepared.
How To Use The Electrocutioner
After completing the Tesla summoning ritual, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most powerful weapons in Dead Rails: the Electrocutioner.
This unique firearm combines deadly damage with an electrifying visual effect, striking enemies with bolts of lightning from the sky. However, its power comes with limitations, including a low ammo count and a need for creative recharging methods.
What The Electrocutioner Does
This is a special and very powerful weapon you receive after summoning Nikola Tesla in the lab, once the lightning storm ends and the zombie scientists are defeated. The weapon will appear at the foot of the surgical table where Tesla’s body used to be.
Only one weapon will spawn, regardless of how many players are on the server.
The weapon looks like a revolver with Tesla coil modifications and sci-fi decorations. It deals heavy damage by calling down lightning strikes from the sky to the location you shoot at, hitting multiple enemies at once.
It has a capacity of 20 shots, dealing between 450 and 700 damage, and if a bolt hits an enemy’s head, it can deal critical damage between 1,400 to 1,600.
How To Recharge The Electrocutioner
This weapon is extremely powerful, but it has limited ammo to balance its strength. Fortunately, there are a few different ways to recharge it during a match:

Lightning Rod. |
To recharge the weapon this way, you’ll need the nighttime lightning storm event to trigger. During this event, lightning will strike randomly at night, and it’s possible for bolts to hit you and deal critical damage. However, if you place a lightning rod nearby, it will absorb the strikes and protect you (though it still damages hostile and neutral mobs like zombies or horses). Drop the weapon next to or directly on the lightning rod and wait for a strike to hit it. This will fully recharge the weapon. |

Holy Water. |
Holy Water in the game works like a Molotov cocktail, acting as a throwable item that creates a green flame puddle and summons lightning in the impact zone. For this strategy, drop the Electrocutioner on the ground and then throw a Holy Water bottle onto it. After the lightning from the Holy Water effect strikes, the weapon will be recharged. |

Crucifix. |
Crucifixes are melee weapons that summon lightning when they hit a mob. To recharge the weapon this way, drop both the Electrocutioner and the Crucifix on the ground, then wait for a zombie to walk over the crucifix. When it’s struck by lightning and killed, the weapon will be recharged. |
How To Defeat Nikola Tesla
Nikola Tesla is the boss with the highest health in the entire game. He can easily take you down quickly if you’re not wearing armor or if you’re poorly positioned when he appears. That’s why it’s best to follow one of the following strategies to increase your chances of survival.
Team Strategy
Play with friends to defeat Tesla. Summoning and fighting him becomes much easier with a coordinated group. Plus, if you die during the battle, the game won’t end immediately. You’ll still win if at least one teammate survives until the bridge countdown ends.
Turrets And Cannons
- Bring Turrets to 80km: Along your journey, you’ll be able to purchase Maxim Turrets at various checkpoints for $125, and ammo boxes for $25 per 100 bullets. To make them work, you must weld both the turret and the ammo box to the train. Once mounted, the turret will deal 12.5 damage per bullet and can be fired directly from the train. You can also find turrets as loot in major structures, especially cities.
- Bring the Cannon to 80km: The Cannon is a field artillery weapon found in Fort Constitution. After defeating the waves of military zombies, the regiment’s zombie captain will drop a vault key. Inside, you’ll find bonds and the cannon with its cannonball ammo. It deals 125 damage per shot but has a very slow rate of fire.
Using Snake Oil
Bring backup Snake Oil. Having at least four Snake Oil bottles per player is a good strategy to avoid being overwhelmed by Tesla’s speed and strength.
This healing drink provides both health regeneration and increased movement speed, helping you dodge Tesla’s attacks and reposition quickly.
Solo Strategy
If you’re playing solo and reach the final fight after summoning Nikola Tesla, your best bet is to climb onto the rooftops of nearby structures and shoot him from above.
Use the Rifle, which deals 50 base damage per shot or 100 damage if you land a headshot.
