The Paldea region has a lot to offer Pokemon players. Whether new to the franchise or a returning player, you must learn a couple of new things when entering the Pokemon Scarlet & Violet world. The Terastallizing mechanic will require a particular amount of attention; it’s completely new and pretty complex, so to master it, you will have to put some time into it.

Rainbows and pastel colors highlight some of the most expensive cards in Unbroken Bonds.
This isn’t uncommon in the Pokemon franchise. For example, shiny hunting and IV breeding are other tasks that take hours. In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, however, to get the perfect Pokemon, you’ll most likely need to change their Tera-Type, and here’s how you can do it.
Updated March 24, 2025, by Andrew Scariati: We’ve updated this guide with more information about getting Scarlet and Violet’s Tera Shards to change your Pokemon Tera Types. We’ve also included a video about Tera Shards in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet to provide you with everything you need to know, including information from the S&V DLCs – The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk.
Where To Get Tera Shards
As you start your adventure in the Paldea region, you’ll be able to Terastalize your Pokemon pretty early on.
Unfortunately, it’s quite probable that the Pokemon you catch won’t have the Tera-Type that you would have hoped for.
This means that inevitably, sooner or later, you’ll have to change it, and this is where Tera Shards come into the picture.
To change a Pokemon’s Tera-Type, you must collect 50 Tera Shards of the same type you’d like it to Terastalize into.
Although it’s possible to get Tera Shard while collecting items in the wild, it’s extremely rare, and you won’t be able to tell what you’ll catch before interacting with it.
The best viable way to find Tera Shards is to battle Terastalized Pokemon.
Tera Shards come from Tera Jewels that shatter when a Terastalized Pokemon falls in battle.
You can find Terastalized Pokemon out and about in the wild, and they can drop Tera Shards of their Tera-Type when defeated.
However, they can be difficult to come by, so it’s always best to interact with a glimmering crystal or use the Pokemon Portal to start a Tera Raid Battle.
Here is how many Tera Shards you can get per battle:
Tera Raid Battle Star Ranking |
Amount of Tera Shards |
---|---|
One-Star Tera Raid Battle |
|
Two-Star Tera Raid Battle |
|
Three-Star Tera Raid Battle |
2 |
Four-Star Tera Raid Battle |
3 |
Five-Star Tera Raid Battle |
4 |
Six-Star Tera Raid Battle |
6 |
Occasionally, you will find a raid that provides almost exclusively Tera Shards, much like the lucky raids that provide several Herba Mystica.
How To Use Tera Shards At The Treasure Eatery
You can use Tera Shards at the Treasure Eatery restaurant after defeating Larry, the Normal-Type Pokemon Gym in Medali.
You can fast-travel to Medali (East) to get there in a flash – it’s right next to the Pokemon Center.
Once you’ve got 50 Tera Shards of a certain type, you can change your Pokemon’s Tera-Type by talking to the restaurant’s chef.
The chef has a yellow speech bubble indicating you can interact with them. Hand in the Tera Shards so the chef can cook their special recipe and select which Pokemon you’d like to give it to.
You can change a Pokemon’s Tera Type as many times as you’d like. However, Terapagos cannot change its Tera Type, making itself the one exception to this rule.
