GTA 6 Map Mod for Grand Theft Auto 5 Taken Down

A mod that added a playable recreation of the unofficial Grand Theft Auto 6 map in Grand Theft Auto 5 has been taken offline after the project was noticed by Rockstar Games’ parent company, Take-Two Interactive. The mod was based on leaked details regarding GTA 6, and understandably, it seems Take-Two was eager to get this specific mod down as fast as possible. It’s clear there is a big demand for any and all GTA 6-related content, with players eager to finally get the follow-up to 2013’s Grand Theft Auto 5.

With each new entry in its long-running crime simulator Grand Theft Auto franchise, Rockstar Games has pushed the envelope of what an open-world game can look and feel like, with the release of GTA 5 being a landmark moment, not just for the company but for the video game industry as a whole. Modder Dark Space recently created a free-to-download GTA 5 map based on information about GTA 6, letting players get a potential feel for what the game may have to offer when it does eventually release. Gameplay footage of the map was shared on Dark Space’s YouTube channel, going viral within the GTA and modding communities alike. This was a big no-no for Take-Two, with the company issuing a copyright strike on the video. Dark Space opted to remove the video from their channel but uploaded a response in which they theorized the mod may have been a little too accurate. There’s not a lot known for sure about how Rockstar will handle GTA 6‘s map, but it will likely be the company’s most realistic and immersive to date.

Dark Space discussed the removal of the mod further with IGN. “I think my map could have ruined the surprise of their map, which I get. If you spent years building out this amazing game world just to have some YouTuber spoil the experience of the map’s shape, size, and vibe… I’d want it removed too,” he said. Fans have been speculating what GTA 6‘s map will look like ever since GTA 5 was released, although recent months have been especially interesting and exciting. Players know for a fact that GTA 6 will be set in Leonida, specifically the city of Vice City, Rockstar’s fictionalized take on Miami, Florida. It’s been a while since players got to visit this location, with the East Coast setting marking a stark difference from GTA 5‘s Los Santos.

Fans got their first look at Grand Theft Auto 6 in December 2023, with Rockstar releasing the official teaser trailer for the game. This trailer blew up online, becoming one of the most viewed non-music videos on sites like YouTube. It’s been over a full year since, with no word on when a second trailer will be dropping, although some fans think April will be a big month for GTA 6 news. In the meantime, players can continue to explore the world of Grand Theft Auto 5, which still impresses more than a decade after its release.
