Hideaki Anno’s Studio Khara revealed on its official X account that the renowned animator, director and scriptwriter, famous for his creation of the highly influential Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, is currently working on at least five different screenplays, which could potentially become six should a new Shin Kamen Rider project be greenlit.
No information regarding the nature of the five screenplays has been revealed as yet. Japanese blogger MW Iwai took Anno’s statement shared on Studio Khara’s X and combined it with other readily available details of Anno’s production schedules to make a timeline of the various projects Anno has been juggling since 2018, including the Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX: Beginning, which premiered in January, while the GQuuuuuuX TV anime is set to air in April.

As of today, I am currently working on voice recording and writing screenplays for five different works. But if the Shin Kamen Rider: Kamen no Sekai [Masker World] project is green-lit, I would also like to work hard on it as a sixth project.

Anno’s Talks About His Intense Work Schedule in Greater Detail
GquuuuuX Has Been In the Works For 7 Long Years
Two days before Studio Khara shared Anno’s thoughts regarding his work and desire to see a new Shin Kamen Rider project get the green light, the studio also shared a lengthy message from Anno about the long production history of the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam GquuuuuuX, which was first drafted in 2018 with Gunbuster director, screenplay writer and storyboard artist, Kazuya Tsurumaki settling on the story concept in December 2018. Anno’s collaborative work on the concept continued in 2021, with the director submitting four scripts in 2022, all while dealing with post-production work on the Shin Ultraman film, preparing for the Hideaki Anno Exhibition, scouting locations for Shin Kamen Rider and working through bonus footage for Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time.
This year alone, Anno has had to deal with the theatrical release of the GquuuuuX: Beginning anime, while also being at the helm of the 50th anniversary celebrations of legendary director Leiji Matsumoto’s Space Battleship Yamato. Space Battleship Yamato: The Complete Record Exhibition was held in Shibuya on March 15 and had a gallery of Space Battleship Yamato’s rich 50-year history, featuring original scripts, rough sketches, cels, audio, and reproductions of the sketches and storyboards.
Mobile Suit Gundam GquuuuuuX is set to premiere on April 8.
