The decision to reboot Dexter once again is intriguing and could go one of two ways. Dexter: Resurrection is a show that people are interested in, but after so many years since the series first began, it is going to be difficult for them to recapture the magic and make it feel as special as it once did. Dexter Morgan Need To Find Love In Dexter: Resurrection
Having the antihero/serial killer lead character be focused on a romantic relationship might seem like a controversial idea on paper, but it’s something that can add a lot of layers to Dexter Morgan’s character. Having Dexter be someone out to rid the world of evil due to his dark passenger is interesting but extremely limited. If he has a romantic partner, a lot more can be done with his character, as he can be placed into totally different scenarios that don’t make sense when he’s single. On top of that, it helps to make Dexter feel a little more human, which is important as it gives audiences a reason to engage with him and not just find him to be a cold killer. That’s crucial when having someone like Dexter as the lead character because while he’s doing dastardly things, it’s important to see glimpses and elements of him being ‘normal.’
Dexter finding love would be an interesting subplot to the upcoming spinoff as audiences would have a new character to care about, as would Dexter himself. The show would be able to have some slower and more relaxing moments of his romantic life, even though that’s something he’s never been natural at previously.
Dexter & Rita’s Relationship Added A Lot To His Character
Dexter had a few notable romances throughout the original series, but the one that worked best was with Rita. They were together for the first four seasons, which are arguably the strongest of the series, and that was particularly important for the fourth show and the impact that the Trinity Killer was able to have generally. They ended up getting married and having a child together in Harrison Morgan, who has gone on to play a key role in the spinoffs. Even though some fans didn’t want to see the softer side of Dexter, it enhanced his dark alter-ego because it felt like such a change from the family man he was trying to portray to the public at the time, and that made those moments feel more shocking and visceral.
It also allowed for entirely different scenes than just seeing him in either a crime setting or having him hunt his next victim. Whether it was the creative ways he came up with to explain his absences and the secret life he was leading or having some elements of comedy in Dexter attempting to try and juggle what a relationship is and everything that entails, it made the show more enjoyable. It provided someone for Dexter to fight for, and eventually, Rita won people over. Their connection ended up feeling genuine, as when things clicked for Dexter, it was something he wanted to cherish and treasure, which gave him an extra reason to try not to get caught.
Dexter In A Relationship Raises The Stakes Of The Show
Something that Dexter’s relationship with Rita did was raise the stakes of every decision that he made, and after so many episodes of the show, it’s important for Dexter: Resurrection to do that. Even something as simple as how he gets out of the house to stalk his potential victims is something that has stakes because Dexter has to explain himself and try not to get caught by whoever his romantic partner is. He has to hide the darker side of his life from them and live two ways at once, which adds a lot of thrill to even the more mundane moments of the show, which don’t have any real stakes if Dexter is single.
Having someone he cares about can put the villain of the show in an interesting position as they can threaten Dexter’s real life, which forces him to potentially make mistakes. Normally, the villain is someone just going about their life when Dexter barges in, but a relationship is even more exciting for the show if they have a connection. Dexter has someone to protect in a way, and while he failed to do that with Rita when the Trinity Killer made her his final victim, that was something the show could play into in the following season. Dexter: Resurrection opting to add a new key relationship for Dexter might seem like a risk, but if it’s done right, it would greatly benefit the show’s quality.
