On a Quest to Ascend The Hassaikai to its Former Glory Days

Overhaul, or Chisaki Kai, was the former leader of the Yakuza group called Shie Hassaikai. Chisaki had not always been a member of the Yakuza; he was previously in the care of All For One and Dr. Kyudai Garaki, living in the same orphanage as Todoroki Toya and had been a potential vessel for All For One.

• In Chapter 419, All For One reveals that Overhauls Quirk was used to create a crude copy of Shigaraki Tomura’s Quirk Decay.
• As Overhaul previously lived in the facility, Dr. Garaki removed the Quirk’s regenerative aspect while leaving its destructive properties.

During his time at the orphanage, Overhaul read a book that presented a theory suggesting that a virus spread worldwide through mice, explaining the sudden emergence of these exceptional abilities. Although this theory lacked hard evidence, and Overhaul resonated with this theory, he held onto the belief that Quirks were a sickness manifested through mice, a notion he carried with him throughout his life.

Chisaki also suffers from a condition known as mysophobia, as he is an extreme germophobe to which the slightest touch of something he deems unsanitary would cause him to break out in hives. During Chisaki’s flashback, he did not seem to have this condition, as he would often get into fights with civilians with no hive outbreaks. During an Overhaul battle with Deku or any battle Overhaul has participated in, his hives can be seen formulating on his face. As a result, it’s possible that his ideology that Quirks are a sickness could be the reason for this condition.

After some time, Chisaki was taken in by the previous Hassaikai boss and felt exceptionally indebted to him for saving him from the streets. Due to that, Chisaki wanted the Yakuza to return to their glory days before Quirks, Heroes, and Villains. However, Overhaul’s attempts to do this strayed far from the Yakuza way. Once Overhaul learned the true nature of Eri’s Quirk: Rewind, he would conduct various experiments on the young girl by dismantling and reassembling her body, leading Eri to be severely traumatized by his actions.

However, Overhaul would make several mistakes that would cost him this ambition. The first was meeting up with the League of Villains and killing Magne, thus angering the group with Himiko Toga and Twice seeking revenge for their fallen friend. The second was Eri escaping, leading Deku and Mirio to find her and formulate her rescue along with the Pro Heroes. After Overhaul was defeated and routed to the villain’s hospital, the League of Villains soon intervened, causing police and Pro Hero fatalities.

Overhaul had taken over the Shie Hassaikai organization after placing the previous Boss in a comatose state with his Quirk. However, during his interaction with the League of Villains, Mr. Compress and Shigaraki Tomura each take revenge on one of his arms, thus leaving Overhaul useless as his Quirk relies on his hands to activate. With Overhaul now Quirkless, this would also mean the previous Yakuza Boss would remain in his comatose state. With this, all of Overhaul’s ambitions have been taken away from him, as Shigaraki also took the drug created from Eri’s Quirk. Overhaul had always been passionate about the Yakuza and bringing them back to their former glory days; however, with everything taken away from him, he is a shell of himself, depressed and ruminating over his losses.

What Happened to Overhaul After The Final War?

Nothing But a Shell of Himself, Chisaki Yearns to See The Former Boss

During the Paranormal Liberation War arc, Overhaul and numerous villains and criminals were released after All For One sent Near High-End Nomus to invade Tartarus. With this massive prison break, Lady Nagant freed Overhaul from his cell, who had been calling out to the previous Yakuza Boss, wanting to see him and apologize.

Still lost and shaken about the part he played in placing his boss in a coma, all Overhaul wanted was to see his boss, agreeing to help anyone as long as they took him to his boss, including Lady Nagant. After Deku defeated Lady Nagant, Overhaul was furious that she was caught by the heroes, as there was no one else willing to take him to see his boss. However, Deku then offered a deal to Overhaul. If he were to apologize and direct the same feelings he has for his boss to Eri, Deku would be willing to honor the deal between Lady Nagant and Overhaul.

Overhaul was subsequently detained and arrested once more, remaining largely unseen until the conclusion of the Final War. Following the Final War, Deku ensured that he fulfilled all his promises, including those about Shigaraki Tomura’s final words to Spinner and honoring the commitment to Chisaki. In Chapter 427, Chisaki is ultimately able to see the former boss again. Previously, Chisaki had left the former leader of the Shie Hassaikai in a comatose state; as a result, he was astonished to find him awake and in good health.

However, thanks to the progression of support items, the former Yakuza was able to recover from the effects of Overhauls Quirk. During this conversation, Overhaul displayed deep regret and remorse for his actions. Overhaul had shown little care for those around him throughout this time, using others as his pawns or human shields to accomplish his goals. However, Overhaul had always deeply respected the former Yakuza boss for saving him; it is only with him that Overhaul shows his pathetic side.

• Eri is the granddaughter of the former Yakuza boss, with a mutant Quirk yet to be seen within the family.
• The former boss disagreed with Chisaki’s methods, requesting him to leave if he did not follow their ways.

During the conversation, Chisaki repeatedly apologizes for what he has done. However, he is also glad that the boss is awake and well. As the former boss was the only person Chisaki would ever listen to, he also berated Chisaki for all he had done, condemning his actions and stating that Chisaki should apologize for everything he had done to her for the rest of his life. It’s likely the former boss also felt he played a role in Eri’s trauma and announced he would be at Chisaki’s side, condemning him for his actions every day until he dies.
