Summary
- A 2013 build of Until Dawn has been shared online.
- This version of the game ran on PS3 and was in first person.
- The story is also set up completely differently, with a unique, more cinematic intro.
Until Dawn was revealed as a PlayStation 3 game, and one that would require the PlayStation Move controller to play. However, after it was demoed to the public, it was decided to drop the Move, switch the camera to third-person, and jump over the PlayStation 4, giving us the iconic horror game we know and love.
Now, footage of a full playthrough of the game in one of the earlier prototype builds has been shared online. This gives us a clear picture of what Until Dawn could have played like if these changes were never made, and also lets us see some of the characters played by different actors.
Until Dawn Prototype Shows A Very Different Version Of The Game
This bridges the gap between the original 2012 beta and the final version of the game
This was shared by the YouTube account Digital Preservation. It differs from the beta build shown off at Gamescom 2012 in a few ways, like players being given the option to play with a PS3 controller, rather than locking them into the Move. Despite this, it’s still in first person, so much of the original vision is still here.

Until Dawn’s Movie Isn’t About Until Dawn, It’s About Supermassive’s Legacy
It’s not Until Dawn, but it’s probably about the games it spawned.
Right off the bat, the setup for Until Dawn is completely different. In this build, we get a much more movie-like intro, as it jumps between Hannah and Beth’s deaths and everyone else partying. We don’t even see the prank that kicked everything off or get the chance to play as Beth. Instead, we immediately jump to playing as Sam – complete with some text-to-speech dialogue, as it seems they hadn’t recorded all of her lines yet. We see this in other characters took, with the game still full of placeholders.
On the whole, the game looks great for an early build, clearly making the most of the PS3 hardware. That said, Supermassive also changed a lot for the PS4 build, using that upgrade to make further improvements. In fact, it’s remarkable just how much changed in the two years between this build and Until Dawn’s launch.
