The Hidden Ones Showcases Lu Jin in New Developer Deep Dive [EXCLUSIVE]

Described as a 3D cinematic action-fighting game, The Hidden Ones adapts the narrative, world, and characters of the martial arts franchise, The Outcast. This understandably means fans have high expectations for its roster, as these can make or break most fighting games, and the world of The Outcast is not lacking in the character department. One such character coming to The Hidden Ones is one of the Ten Masters, Lu Jin.

Game Rant can exclusively provide this deep dive look at The Hidden Ones‘ take on Lu Jin, where Morefun Studios developers have leaned heavily on his Inner Demon that emerged as a result of the Heart Labors Formation. Lu Jin sought to use that fury to strike down The Fulfill and protect Longhu Mountain, and that fury is what’s going to drive Lu Jin in The Hidden Ones‘ gameplay. From his design to tips for his aggressive approach, Game Rant also spoke with The Hidden Ones lead designer Fox Lin.

Lu Jin [Inner Demon] – The Hidden Ones

Introduction to Lu Jin

Lu Jin Gameplay

Mocapping Lu Jin

Lu Jin [Inner Demon] is designed based on this demonized state of the character, where players will get to see not only his obsessions and hidden resentments, while also understanding his strong determination, iron will, and sense of justice. All of this is included in his gameplay, although it is the ferocity that manifests most. To no surprise, Lu Jin is a very aggressive character. He only became more aggressive throughout development, with Lin revealing,

“The first thing we decided to do was sacrifice his defensive abilities in exchange for stronger attacks. In the early stages of his development, we went for a moderate design, where a short press of the defense button would allow Lu Jin to perform a Standard move. However, after internal discussions, we decided to go all-in and fully amplify his aggressive gameplay. As a result, we decided his combat style: his defense now has a cooldown, but he is rewarded with two Standards by pressing the defense button twice consecutively in a short period. We wanted to encourage more attacking and aggressive gameplay from Lu Jin’s players.”

Lu Jin’s Ultimate Skill Animation

This manifests in his skills as well, where players are encouraged to push that extreme aggression and almost allow players to control the battlefield for a time. Speaking about his skills, Lin said, “Skills that feature multiple dashes and the trade-off of regular defense for multiple “Thunder Talisman” Standards allow players to maintain constant pressure on their opponents.” That does make his weakness clear, however: the cooldown of his defenses and the ability for the opponent to take advantage thereof. As seen below, Lin highlighted a couple of starter tips for playing as or against Lu Jin.

Lu Jin Starter Tips

  • “To master Lu Jin, players should focus on repeatedly pressing the defense button to perform his Standards, maximizing offensive advantages while utilizing Cancel in duels. When an enemy is knocked down, a short press of the defense button triggers a sweeping attack, allowing players to maintain constant pressure on their opponent.”
  • “If you are playing against Lu Jin, here are some tips: Since Lu Jin has a wide array of Standards, players can capitalize on defense and counter-attack opportunities following his moves. Also, take advantage of his defense cooldown by lunging at him.”
