This article may contain spoilers for the God of War TV series for anyone that hasn’t played the games.Sony just dropped a cinematic trailer celebrating the last 20 years of God of War. It’ll bring a chill and tear to many dedicated fans that have been walking Kratos’ path since the very beginning.
Kratos has been on an epic journey since 2005. His tragic story began in Sparta, Greece. Outnumbered and overpowered, Kratos struck a bargain with Ares, the God of War. Kratos offered his soul and pledged his services in exchange for victory. Gifted with the Blades of Chaos, Kratos laid waste to entire towns, blindly following Ares’ will. Until, Ares tricked Kratos into killing his wife and child, Lysandra and Calliope. Since then, Kratos has worn the ashes of his family, becoming the Ghost of Sparta. The moment has haunted the anti-hero ever since and fueled a 20-year-long release of gaming titles that track the achievement and eventual fallout of his revenge. After Kratos murders Ares, he proceeds to lay waste to the entire Greek pantheon, wiping them out. The Norse era of the games, which began when Santa Monica Studios released God of War (2018), reveals that Kratos’ past violence has turned into a harrowing nightmarish trauma. These sequel titles have dealt with his attempts to move on from his arrogant, brutal past, and forge a more hopeful, peaceful future for himself and the humans who live under the tyranny of other pantheons.

God of War – Thank You for 20 Years: A Tribute to Kratos Trailer
In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the God of War franchise, Sony releases a tribute trailer to series protagonist, Kratos.
Now, Santa Monica Studios has released a 20th Anniversary Tribute to Kratos, showing just how far the titular God of War has come in proving that his path is meant for more than mere destruction. It only reaffirms that the studio understands and respects the character completely.
Fans are well aware of the dedication of creative directors like Cory Barlog, who helmed the series throughout the Norse saga. In the comments section of the video, many gamers chose to voice their support for Santa Monica Studios remastering the older God of War trilogy:
“JUST PORT THE ENTIRE GREEK SAGA GAMES BOTH ON PS5 AND PC ALREADY SANTA MONICA STUDIO, AND OUR WALLET WILL BE SURELY YOURS!!!!!!!!!!” – @bastianhendar1454

“Please, you have to remake the old games, almost all of them are stuck 2 generations behind, you guys are the best team to do this!!!!!!!!!” – @luccasvrb
The New God Of War Series Trailer Is Getting Fans Excited For The Future
This tribute is not only getting fans hyped for a remaster of the original trilogy but has also demonstrated that a God of War adaptation has a massive, dedicated audience eager to consume more Kratos content. A fandom that is not only willing to show up for the grand, violent moments of spectacle but also for the emotional core of Kratos’ story. His tale is one of redemption and the tribute shows us that the character has gone to great lengths to reckon with his past. The God of War passes on this crucial lesson to his son, Atreus, “Who I was, is not who you’ll be. We must be better.“
As recently as the 2023 DLC, God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla, Kratos confronted his past self, bringing his story full circle. He questioned his own self-worth: “A god of war… a god of pain. Suffering. Destruction. The Norns said I chase a redemption that I know I can never deserve. What does that make me? God of fools.” He acknowledges his darker side, “You are cruel, and arrogant, and selfish“, but is also willing to believe in a better version of himself: “You are more than that.” Hopefully, the adaptation will be faithful and be able to carry this amazing character development over to live-action.
The adaptation will be created as a TV series for Prime Video. Unfortunately, it has experienced some production issues recently. The project suffered setbacks after a number of scripts were thrown out in favor of a new creative direction. However, luckily, Sony and Amazon finally found a creative voice to lead the project: Star Trek producer Donald Moore. Now, as fans celebrate the God of War series’ 20th Anniversary, there is much to look back on fondly, and much to look forward to.
