Fans are firmly starting to shift their attention towards the heavily-rumored Far Cry 7, with close to four years having passed since the last mainline release for the classic Ubisoft franchise. While not officially confirmed, many reports and theories have surfaced in recent months that aim to paint a picture of what this next project could look like, with many of them suggesting that sweeping and ambitious changes will define how Far Cry 7 is ultimately received by players.
Far Cry 7 could definitely find success by tweaking the usual formula of the franchise while still maintaining its core identity, but Ubisoft could find similar success by simply amplifying elements of the Far Cry framework that have existed for years. Be it through co-operative gameplay, head-to-head team battles, or comprehensive map editors, multiplayer has been an unsung yet consistent element of the Far Cry IP for some time, and Far Cry 7 could do well to flesh this out even further.

Far Cry 7 Could Be the Title To Really Cement the Franchise’s Multiplayer Potential
The Far Cry franchise is first and foremost celebrated for its vibrant and varied open worlds, with the franchise developing a successful framework of exploration and combat variety within vibrant but unforgiving settings. Of course, the core single-player experience of any Far Cry game should always come first before anything else, but this has not stopped the franchise from also featuring engaging and memorable multiplayer modes over the years.
Multiplayer has existed from the very inception of Far Cry as a franchise, with the IP’s first two entries both possessing a range of classic PvP modes such as free for all and team deathmatch for players to face off against each other. 2012’s Far Cry 3 took this a step further by featuring this same competitive multiplayer alongside a dedicated co-op campaign with unique missions and playable characters. Far Cry 3 managed to include all this while featuring one of the best single-player campaigns across the entire franchise, showing how well ambitious single-player and multiplayer modes can co-exist within the IP.
Across Far Cry 5 and Far Cry 6, the franchise’s online offerings now extend to full campaign co-op, with Far Cry 5 famously featuring its own Arcade map editor that gave power directly to the community to create their own experiences using the game’s assets. The steady evolution of Far Cry‘s multiplayer has been clear to see, and it only seems right that a potential Far Cry 7 should continue this tradition.
An Improved and More Accessible Map Editor Could Be the Perfect Match For Far Cry 7
Far Cry 6 divisively chose not to feature a map editor, despite the success of Far Cry 5‘s Arcade feature, so Far Cry 7 could make a real statement of multiplayer intent by re-introducing a map editor to the franchise. To perhaps take this a step further, Far Cry 7 could even allow players to edit segments of the game’s main campaign map to create brand-new experiences for co-operative play, while of course featuring the same competitive PvP modes that fans have come to expect from the series.
Far Cry 7‘s map editor could even take inspiration from Battlefield‘s Portal mode, which allows players to create custom experiences using assets from a wide range of past entries to the franchise instead of just a singular game.
Despite the passionate communities that surround Far Cry‘s multiplayer offerings, this element of the IP is often completely absent from things like pre-release marketing, and Far Cry 7 could rock the boat by making a clear advertising push for the game’s online content alongside the usual single-player promotional material. The crazy and high-octane gameplay of the Far Cry franchise is only heightened when fighting alongside or against other players. Far Cry 7 can make a real push to firmly plant the franchise’s multiplayer on the map after so many years of consistent yet fairly low-profile online experiences.
