If you’re aiming to get close to your favourite companion in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, our Companion Quest walkthroughs might be just what you need.

While his fascination with graveyards and older age might be off-putting to some players, his romance is one of the sweetest in the game. If you want to start romancing him as soon as possible, you’ll be happy to know that there are plenty of ways to gain his approval early on. Here’s how you can start laying on the charm.

How To Recruit Emmrich

Embracing skeleton statue in the Necropolis in Emmrich's personal quest, Arrangements in in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

After the events of the ‘On Blighted Wings’ or ‘On Deadly Wings’ quest, you will find yourself in need of a Dragon Hunter and Necromancer. This will lead to two separate quests appearing in your journal that will end with you recruiting Taash and Emmrich.

Emmrich’s quest ‘Where the Dead Must Go’ will take you to the Necropolis, where you will help him clear out a group of invading Venatori. After completing the quest, you’ll head back to the Lighthouse, and enter his room. Once you finish watching the brief cutscene, you’ll be free to bring Emmrich along on quests with you.

While it’s not required to romance Emmrich as a Mourn Watch Rook, it will make your experience better because you’ll have access to unique interactions and dialogue options.

This is the case for every party member. It’s wise to romance them with a member of their matching faction.

How To Quickly Boost Your Bond Level With Emmrich

Rook and Emmrich in the Laboratory of the Lighthouse in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

There are a few different ways for you to increase your bond level with the great professor Volkarin. The first is to make him one of your usual party members. You’ll get a small bond increase as you complete quests.

During dialogue conversations, be sure to choose the heart option whenever it appears. Rook doesn’t always choose the right time to flirt, but as Emmrich will tell you, he doesn’t mind.

Whenever you take a break from your adventure to head back to the Lighthouse, pull up your map to check Emmrich’s icon. If he wants to talk to you, he’ll have a chat marker above his head. If he has a quest for you, it will be an exclamation mark.

If you ignore Emmrich’s side quests, you won’t be able to romance him or make him a Hero of the Veilguard.

Every faction in Dragon Age: The Veilguard has side quests for you to complete that will increase their power level. This includes the Mourn Watch. For a little extra Emmrich approval and dialogue, take him with you when you complete these quests.

Emmrich Gift Location

Vorgoth, the Mourn Watch Merchant in the Necropolis in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Like in previous Dragon Age games, you can increase your relationship with your companions by giving them a gift. You can buy Emmrich’s gift from the same area where you recruited him. Talk to Vorgoth in the Necropolis and buy the Haunted Statuette.

After handing over 60 gold and ten flawless crystals, you’ll receive the quest, ‘Fit for a Necromancer.’ All you have to do to complete it is to fast-travel back to the Lighthouse and give the Haunted Statuette to Emmrich.

Dialogue Options And Key Choices

Every companion in Dragon Age: The Veilguard has dialogue choices and key choices that they approve of and disapprove of. Emmrich, being the gentleman that he is, prefers it when you’re polite.

For example, during the Weisshaupt quest, you have a choice between reasoning with the First Warden or knocking him out. You’ll gain a good chunk of Emmrich approval if you choose the former.

You’ll also gain approval with Emmrich if you show an interest when he speaks about topics centering around death or show respect for the dead in general. During Emmrich’s personal quest ‘Walking the Graves’, a wisp will approach you. If you greet it, you’ll gain approval. On the flip side, if you tell it to move along, Emmrich disapproves.

In short, just be nice, and Emmrich will take a liking to you.

How To Commit To Your Romance Choice

You can flirt with multiple companions without anyone getting jealous or angry. However, there does come a point when you have to lock in your choice. For Emmrich, this comes during his personal quest, ‘Arrangements.’

At the end of the quest, Emmrich will bring you to his parents’ graves. Choose one of the two positive choices, either “Pleasure to meet you” or “Uh, hello.” After that, pick the heart option, “Never lonely” to commit to Emmrich.

From here on out, you’ll no longer see heart options when interacting with other companions.

Should You Allow Emmrich To Become A Lich?

In Emmrich’s personal quest, ‘The Sacrifice of Souls‘, you’ll be able to choose to allow Emmrich to remain mortal or become a lich. You can continue your romance with him no matter which option you choose. However, his appearance and the way the romance is handled changes, depending on your choice.

He’s a little more open about his feelings for you if he’s a Lich. If he remains mortal, he’s still insecure about his age gap with the player. Both scenarios result in an argument right before the point of no return. If he’s a Lich, it’s because he’s worried you’ll die in the fight with Ghilan’nain. If he’s mortal, it’s because he’s hyper-focused on the fact that he’s most likely going to die before you do.
