Fans Have Wanted Capital Wasteland Content in Fallout 76 For a While Now
As a prequel set so early in the official Fallout franchise timeline, there are naturally few opportunities for Fallout 76 to explore tie-ins to other media within the franchise. So, when tie-ins to future characters, locations, and events do happen, they are quite a big deal for longtime Fallout fans. One such prominent example of this is Fallout 76’s Pitt Expeditions, which gives players an early preview of what would later become the location of The Pitt DLC for Fallout 3.
The Capital Wasteland is an Ideal Destination for Future Expeditions or Map Expansions in Fallout 76
Ever since this direct tie-in to Fallout 3, fans have been hopeful that Fallout 76 would visit past versions of other iconic locations from throughout the franchise. Another location that many fans have hoped might appear in Fallout 76 one day is the main setting of Fallout 3, the Capital Wasteland, whether it be in a future expedition in Fallout 76, or another map expansion, since the Capital Wasteland is located quite close to the Eastern border of Fallout 76’s playable area anyway.
Despite their proximity to each other, this isn’t the only reason why Fallout 76 has the perfect opportunity to visit Fallout 3’s Capital Wasteland. Now that the playable Ghoul character is available in Fallout 76, this makes a tie-in to Fallout 3’s Capital Wasteland seem more likely than ever before, considering that this region is home to one of the biggest Ghoul sanctuaries in the Fallout universe: the Underworld.
In Fallout 3, players can find the Underworld hidden in the Museum of History building.
A Visit to the Underworld Could Fit Fallout 76’s Setting and Story
Throughout the town of Grafton in Fallout 76’s Toxic Valley region, players can find various notes named “Ghoul’s Notes” that were left by William Keller, a former resident of Appalachia who was transformed into a Ghoul alongside his fellow survivors. These notes tell the sad story of what these survivors’ Ghoul transformations have cost them, and that they would be seeking refuge in “a community like ours” East in the Capital City. While these notes don’t mention it by name, it’s safe to assume that William was referring to the Underworld Ghoul sanctuary from Fallout 3’s Capital Wasteland. If so, this would confirm that the Underworld existed in the official Fallout franchise timeline as early in the timeline as Fallout 76 takes place, making a lore-friendly visit to this location a possibility.
Not only does a visit to the Underworld likely align with Fallout 76’s timeline and seem like the perfect reason for an expedition or map expansion for players to finally visit the broader Capital Wasteland, but it could also be a perfect fit for Fallout 76’s overarching story, which is to rebuild America after the Great War by aiding local survivor factions. Ultimately, Fallout 76 may have the perfect opportunity to visit Fallout 3’s Capital Wasteland to take players to the famous Ghoul sanctuary located there.
