Overwatch 2 has been making waves in the hero-shooter community, with a fresh batch of LE SSERAFIM skins, the addition of Perks, and a new damage hero, Freja, and Blizzard has built upon the excitement surrounding the game by announcing that BlizzCon is returning in 2026. Though some suggest that this announcement may have come a bit too early, the advance notice gives fans plenty of time to plan for the convention, including making travel arrangements if needed.

Considering that BlizzCon has become a popular way to celebrate Blizzard’s games, including World of Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, and Overwatch 2, and their communities, it’s exciting that a date for the next event has already been set. This is especially notable since Blizzard skipped over BlizzCon 2024 and 2025. For fans of Overwatch, September 12 and 13, 2026 are particularly interesting dates, as they could provide the perfect opportunities for Team 4 to reveal some long-desired content, such as a fully-fledged animated series or a second round of PvE missions.

Team 4 Has Ample Time to Breathe New Life Into Overwatch 2’s Narrative

It wouldn’t be accurate to say that Overwatch players have been without content to look forward to, even though that content has not been shared at a BlizzCon event in some time. After all, Overwatch 2‘s February Spotlight event revealed two new heroes, Freja and a hero code-named Aqua, a Stadium mode, Perks, and more. On top of that, a 6v6 Open Queue was added to the game as part of the Season 15 midseason update, and it appears that Team 4 is eager to deliver many of the playerbase’s most-requested features.

While the PvP scene of the game is thriving, particularly with the addition of Perks and 6v6, BlizzCon 2026 could be the perfect time to breathe new life into the abandoned PvE missions of Season 6. For a time, it seemed almost certain that Overwatch 2‘s Invasion missions has been canceled. However, in December 2024, eagle-eyed fans noticed that Blizzard rehired its former PvE lead, Jorge Murillo, giving them hope for future PvE missions. Although Blizzard considered the PvE missions a financial failure due to poor sales, a vocal portion of the community has expressed a desire to see the missions’ story completed.

Murillo also worked on Overwatch 2‘s PvP experience, suggesting he may not have been brought back for PvE.

The Timing Is Still Right for an Overwatch Animated Series

BlizzCon 2026 could also serve as an opportunity to introduce a fully developed animated series. GENESIS, the animated miniseries that was released in conjunction with Season 6’s PvE content, was a step in the right direction. Some even thought that GENESIS could lead to Overwatch 2‘s own show, like League of LegendsArcane.

Blizzard was once considering an animated series, and in 2020, the co-president of Activision Blizzard, Nick van Dyk, mentioned that he had “developed and sold an animated series based [on] Blizzard’s Overwatch franchise” that would have aired on the streaming platform Netflix. After Overwatch‘s Netflix show fell through, due to legal issues and unlawful conduct, the StarCraft and Diablo projects were also abandoned. Despite all this, there is still time to capitalize on the popularity of Overwatch‘s universe and characters.

With numerous leadership changes at Activision Blizzard, 2026 could be the ideal moment for an Overwatch series to find a home on a streaming platform. Fortunately, with Aaron Keller at the helm as the hero-shooter’s current Game Director, an animated show has real potential. In a conversation with Overwatch 2 streamer Emongg during the February Spotlight event, Keller mentioned that “it would be awesome to get [an Overwatch 2 TV show].” Even if the idea is in its very early stages, BlizzCon 2026 could still showcase a few teasers to excite fans of the game’s lore.
