Summary
- Lux is a powerful mage champion with simple mechanics and long-range burst potential.
- Nautilus is a tanky support pick with consistent crowd control abilities.
- Yuumi offers a unique playstyle where players become untargetable and can provide long-range poke, shields, and healing.
After a decade of champion release, League of Legends has just ticked over the 170 mark with the release of Mel, a long-range mid lane mage who has seen some flexibility in the Support and ADC roles. But with some tricky-to-understand mechanics and less than conventional supportive capabilities, new players will want to pick up a champion with more consistent healing output, crowd-control skills, and a simplistic kit in order to learn the fundamentals of the role.

Thankfully, the Support lineup is wide and full of all kinds of class types and playstyles that can fit pretty much any player’s desire. In general, they fall into three main categories: Enchanters, Tanks, and Mages, with a few blurring the lines between, and with each archetype, there are plenty of champions to choose from for players just starting out and looking for an easier time playing the game.

Nautilus
Crowd-Control Overload
- Consistent crowd control and target lockdown
- Tanky frontliner with some multi-use mobility
When choosing a tank to slot into a team, Nautilus is a great choice for establishing a hefty frontline with some serious danger attached to a hook. His abilities are very simple to understand, and while hitting the anchor on enemies can be tricky at times, his auto attacks come with a handy root, and his ultimate launches a shockwave that knocks up the target and anyone in its path, all on a point-and-click ability.
His role in the team is like any other supportive tank: stand with the ADC, look for hooks on the enemy carry, and CC anyone diving into the backline. With such consistent CC and power all in one kit, he works well in a range of scenarios and team compositions and brings plenty of tools to the table to deny enemy characters from even being able to move.

Lux
The Light Of Demacia
- Long-range CC spells
- Simple, high-damage spell combos and itemization
Lux is one of the most popular characters in the entire game, with some opting for the mid lane when picking her up and others choosing the Support role where she is equally if not more powerful. Her kit consists of an easy-to-land slow, a double root, a small shield that can be tossed to herself and nearby teammates and a high-burst beam of light that can devastate any champions from a whole screen away.

There really isn’t much complexity to her, with the most interesting mechanic being her passive that marks champions hit by her abilities, which can then be popped for even more damage with either an auto-attack or another spell. This means that players can set up in a bush and wait for an unsuspecting foe to waddle on by, before pressing Q+E+R to unload the ridiculous burst potential of this small but mighty mage. While Supports might normally be considered healers, Lux takes things into her own hands, letting the player become the carry themselves.

Alistar
More Than Just A Cow
- Ridiculously tanky with long CC chains
- Easy to land combos with no skill-shots
Sometimes it’s nice to hop into the rift and not worry about landing skills on fast-moving targets and, instead, just run at the enemy menacingly. Alistar provides that fantasy perfectly, having a great playmaking kit with consistent CC and a very simple game plan that still has some skill expression mixed into it.
The basic combo rotation is W+Q for a dash into a knock-up combo and then casting E to chase down the target with an extra slow and stun to finish. Of course, mistakes happen, and sometimes a play doesn’t go too well, but with Alistar’s handy healing passive, the lane becomes significantly easier for both the ADC and Support. On top of that, his ultimate makes him virtually unkillable, which is useful for taking on the frontline position during a team fight or running away to safety without taking fatal damage.

Sona
A Reliable Taxi
- Aura spells to heal, shield, and speed multiple allies
- Game-changing ultimate with good late-game scaling
Sona is the epitome of the MOBA enchanter, bringing so much utility and Support to the game whilst not demanding over-the-top mechanics of the player. Her kit revolves around songs, one for healing, one for speed, and one for poke, all of which are either auras or auto-aiming, allowing the player to focus on their positioning and the enemy’s skillshots while not missing their own.
She also comes with one of the strongest ultimates in League of Legends, which, while it is a skillshot, is fairly hard to dodge and comes with a cooldown refund later in the game. Becoming stronger as the game time ticks up is incredibly valuable, and Sona certainly falls into that category, building up stacks on ability casts that reduce her cooldowns. Later on, she is able to basically cast her ult on a 30-second cooldown, on top of providing some impressive sustain and map traversal for the rest of her team.

Blitzcrank
All About The Hook
- Easy-to-learn combo that basically guarantees a kill
- Rhythmic playstyle that teaches cooldown management and when to go in
Blitzcrank is the poster child for what defines a hook champ. With all his power pushed into the grabbing fist, players can put all their attention into landing just one skillshot, which can turn the tide of a fight in seconds while not punishing the misses too severely. A basic combo looks something like W (to run at the enemy), Q, E, and R if the player is level six, which provides a long CC chain that, if the hook is landed, nets a kill almost every time.
Just the threat of the hook is enough to scare enemy players away. He also commands so much space with his presence on the rift that players will need to walk carefully through the fog or risk being yoinked into the enemy team. He is a great champ to learn and has one key goal: hook the enemy. Even if the player misses 9/10 hooks, that one big connect onto the enemy ADC is normally enough to win entire games.
3
Soraka
The Literal GOAT Healer
- Health trading heal mechanic
- Global healing ultimate for the entire team
Some supports play on the frontline, while others, like Soraka, sit back and let the team do the work, topping their health pools up and running towards low allies for a massive injection of healing. Her healing output is absolutely baffling right from the start, with the limiting factor being that she uses some of her own health in order to cast the spell. But, by landing her Q, she heals herself a significant amount and, just by landing it once, can keep the fight going for a long while.
Her biggest asset has to be her ultimate, which casts a beam from the sky that heals all alive allies for a large amount, regardless of whether they are right next to the player or all the way on the top lane. It’s an instant cast, with no skill shots required. It’s also a great way for players to learn to watch the map and how fights are going elsewhere, as during a 1v1, she can turn the tide in the ally’s favor without having to be close by.
2
Leona
More Shield Than Sword
- Built-in tankiness that gets stronger with levels
- Simplistic CC abilities that can keep her glued to targets for a long time
Leona is another champion who slots into the tank/CC Support category, bringing a sword and shield to the fight and stunning enemies in absurdly long chains that will likely leave them feeling beyond frustrated by the end of the game. A short but fast hook, a stun on an auto attack, and a long-range, easy-to-land stun ultimate make her super strong at getting onto carries playing from afar. What’s more is that none of her abilities can be blocked by an enemy, making focus fire significantly easier than other champions.

1
Yuumi
Hated By Most But Loved By Many
- Pocket-style gameplay that makes the user untargetable
- Synergy with strong scaling carries and can swap to more fed members on the fly
When it comes to discussions about champion design and characters in MOBAs that are divisive in their gameplay, Yuumi is at the top of the list. The player gets to hop onto an ally and basically let them take the wheel, not needing to move or dodge skills and instead being able to cast some long-range poke, shields, and waves of healing all while never taking a single point of damage.
When one doesn’t even need to click their mouse around the map, the gameplay becomes so easy it hurts, which gives the player a lot of exposure to new champions and their abilities. This also gives players a chance to get a grasp of how and when to ward safely, due to the increased risk that comes with being a squishy cat. She is simple, easy, and incredibly strong, allowing the player to pick up some victories without stressing over 100s of skillshots and complex game mechanics.
