When it comes to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure characters, no character is more infamous than Dio Brando. Acting as the main antagonist of two JoJo’s parts, and influencing almost every part posthumously after that, Dio is arguably the single most important character in the franchise as a whole. Due to this, when Part 7 took place in an alternate timeline, there was bound to be a character that was reminiscent of Dio, heavily featured in the story.

Named Diego Brando, interestingly enough, compared to his original timeline counterpart, Diego wasn’t the main antagonist of Part 7. Instead, Diego acted as a unique villain and rival to Johnny and Gyro for most of Steel Ball Run. Although his role in the new universe isn’t as pivotal as Dio’s, Diego is still an extremely important aspect of Steel Ball Run and a fantastic character overall.

A Horse Rider Who Grew To Hate Humanity

Born in England, as a child, Diego Brando, a well designed JoJo’s villain, was abandoned by his mother and father and buried alive to dispose of him. However, he was saved both by a storm and his mother, who would quickly come to regret this decision. With his father leaving, the two went to work and lived on a farm in extreme poverty. Eventually, at the age of six, Diego’s mother would pass away from an infection, leaving Diego on his own.

Soon after, Diego from JoJo’s Steel Ball Run, who had a natural fondness for horses, would become a jockey and stable boy. He would later even go on to work at the Joestar’s Ranch and would eventually become a full horse rider, going on to become a celebrity in the field. Due to his status and the fame of a new horse race across America, Diego was drawn to and entered the Steel Ball Run race.

Although Diego Brando started as a kind child in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 7, the constant hardship in life that he faced from other people slowly gave him a disdain for humanity. Diego simply prioritizes himself and is willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead and climb the social ladder, even if it means stepping on others to get there. Additionally, Diego hates humanity and wishes to prove how much better he is than those around him through his unprecedented success. Solitary and uncaring, Diego has the perfect makings of a strong but sympathetic villain in JoJo’s.

Jotaro is one of the most iconic protagonists in all of shonen, and he has some pretty legendary quotes from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure to back that up.

After fusing with the Left Eye of the Saint’s Corpse, Diego gained the Stand ability, Scary Monsters. This ability allows Diego to infect others with a virus that turns anyone he touches into a dinosaur that can, in turn, infect others as well. Using this ability, Diego is able to create armies of various dinosaur creatures that are under his control, greatly assisting him in combat. Additionally, Diego can also use his Stand to transform himself into a dinosaur, or a human-dinosaur hybrid, which gives him incredibly enhanced physical stats, and extremely honed senses.

For most of the story, Diego is simply on his own side, teaming up with characters like the main antagonist of Part 7, Funny Valentine, and Hot Pants. Overall, although he isn’t the main antagonist of the part, Diego acts as a strong rival and foil to Johnny, taking the original rivalry between Jonathan and Dio from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 1 and translating it now to the modern story of the manga.

In the end, Diego is a character fans should keep an eye on once the Steel Ball Run anime for JoJo’s is released. Overall, Diego is one of the most unique characters in the part and continues the legacy of Dio Brando extremely well. Hopefully, when Part 7 is released, it will do this excellent JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure character justice.
