It’s been announced that Silent Hill 4: The Room is being added to GOG’s Game Preservation Program, with a new update restoring cut content and adding helpful quality-of-life features. Silent Hill 4: The Room was first released in 2004 on PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Whereas the original Silent Hill trilogy was met with mostly positive reviews, Silent Hill 4: The Room experienced a mixed reaction from critics. It’s become a cult classic of sorts among horror fans in the years since then, and luckily, has been playable on modern PCs for years.

In 2020, Silent Hill 4: The Room was released on GOG, making it possible for PC gamers to revisit the classic horror game on modern hardware. Now Silent Hill 4: The Room has been added to GOG’s Game Preservation Program, which means that there will be an effort to keep the game playable on modern PC hardware indefinitely. This is great news for horror fans that want to take a trip down memory lane, though GOG has taken its preservation of Silent Hill 4: The Room a step further with its latest update.

Why Silent Hill 4 Could Be Konami’s Best Choice for a Remake

Silent Hill 2’s remake is already in the works, but Silent Hill 4’s untapped potential could give Konami food for thought to follow it up.

Not only has Silent Hill 4: The Room been added to the Game Preservation Program – the game has had some of its cut content restored. The PC version of the game was missing some of the hauntings that would torment players as they explored protagonist Henry’s apartment, but they are now back in the game. GOG has also added controller support for Silent Hill 4: The Room‘s PC version, complete with rumble. Those interested in picking up the game should note that Silent Hill 4: The Room is currently discounted on GOG by 30%, lowering its price to just $6.99 until April 3.

Silent Hill 4: The Room PC New Features

  • Restored hauntings
  • Controller support

For those unfamiliar with the game, Silent Hill 4: The Room is easily one of the more unique entries in the survival-horror franchise. Its gameplay is split between a creepy apartment and the world of Silent Hill, accessible through a hole in the bathroom wall. The game uses a first-person perspective when in the apartment and a third-person view when in Silent Hill. While not everyone was thrilled with the greater focus on combat in Silent Hill, others loved Silent Hill 4: The Room‘s originality and praise the apartment setting in particular as being a interesting one. Personally, it’s one of the more memorable horror games I’ve played, and I think it’s definitely underrated.

The new version of Silent Hill 4: The Room is exclusive to GOG on PC for now, so console gamers can’t revisit the game without breaking out their old hardware. The Silent Hill series has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years thanks to the success of the Silent Hill 2 remake, so maybe an effort will be made to make Silent Hill 4: The Room more widely available.
