The Best Sega Master System Console Games In Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii

A popular feature in the Yakuza/Like A Dragon series is the addition of numerous minigames and arcade games. In Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, RGG Studios not only added arcade cabinets but also an entire gaming console: the Sega Master System.

There are a total of 15 Master System games in Pirate Yakuza. You will need to hunt down some of these games, transforming Majima’s adventure from treasure hunting to retro game hunting. Flicky is a platform game that distinguishes itself from others in the genre by requiring you to collect other characters to complete the level. You play as a blue bird who collects small birds and must protect them from cats and other enemies.

In Flicky, when you save the small birds, they follow you in a chain, and you must guide them to the exit. If enemies hit you, they will break the chain, and you’ll need to retrieve the small birds again. You can also jump across platforms and use some items as an offense.

Galaxy Force

Galaxy Force is a rail shooter in which you control a combat spaceship. The game involves shooting down enemy spaceships and other obstacles, such as asteroids.

What makes this game unique is that you can move in different directions, and the camera will follow you, rather than staying in a static position like in other spaceship games of the era.

Global Defense is a scrolling shooter clearly inspired by the politics and military projects of the 1980s. You control a satellite orbiting Earth, tasked with destroying enemy missiles and other threats.

In Global Defense, there is a crosshair that you use to both shoot and move the satellite. It is one of the most difficult games in the collection because, to move, you must hold a button for the stick to work. There is also enemy fire that you cannot destroy; you can only evade it.

Fantasy Zone

Fantasy Zone is a scrolling shooter. Like other scrolling shooters of the era, the player controls a spaceship. This one is called Opa-Opa. Opa-Opa is quite popular in Sega’s lore and is known by some as one of the company’s first mascots.

Compared to most other spaceship games, the levels in Fantasy Zone are very colorful and vivid. The spaceship has a main rapid-fire gun and can also drop bombs. In each level, you need to destroy enemy bases, and a boss will appear at the end. You will earn points in each level, which can be used in a store to upgrade your ship.

Poseidon Wars 3-D

In Poseidon Wars 3-D, you play as a Naval Officer tasked with saving the country from a crisis. You control a submarine and destroy enemy forces with its arsenal. You can choose from a variety of missions, such as destroying a big ship, eliminating a convoy, recovering a port, etc.

While the levels are side-scrolling and continue indefinitely, you will face the final bosses in just one direction.

Known in Japan as Secret Command, it was released in the U.S. as a game based on Rambo: First Blood Part II. The red bandana, machine gun, bow, and arrows are clear indicators that the game was inspired by the Rambo films.

Secret Command is a run-and-gun action game. You can use a machine gun and a limited number of explosive-tipped arrows to eliminate enemy tanks. The levels are dynamic, with water spots you can traverse. You can also use rocks and other environmental elements as cover and shoot from behind them.

Maze Hunter 3-D

Maze Hunter 3-D is an action game that uses the SegaScope 3-D Glasses. Even in this version of Pirate Yakuza, you can see how the 3-D technology was utilized. As the main character, you can jump, and when he does, you can see him getting closer to the camera.

The levels are presented from a top-down perspective and are designed as mazes. You’ll need to explore to find new items and keys that will help you escape the maze and reach the end of the level.

Space Harrier 3D

Space Harrier 3D is a popular three-dimensional action game. You control the Space Harrier, who can run and fly thanks to a flight belt. You can move sideways while the character charges forward, evading obstacles and shooting enemy spaceships.

The Space Harrier games also have a history with the Like A Dragon series. The arcade versions have appeared in previous Yakuza games. To achieve full completion and unlock certain achievements in other Yakuza games, you must master the Space Harrier game. Thankfully, in Pirate Yakuza, this is not required for achievements.

Quartet is a run-and-gun game that blends level design with platformer elements. It is one of the easier games in the collection, as you can take multiple hits before losing a life.

You play as Mary, a lady in a red dress who battles robots to reach the exit of each level. Once you reach the exit, you’ll face a boss; defeating it will grant you the key to the exit door. Mary’s dress changes color when she is hit. The game’s art style clearly takes inspiration from 1960s-70s sci-fi films like Star Trek and Barbarella.

Star Jacker

Star Jacker is a shoot ’em up, but what sets it apart from others in the genre is that you control four spaceships instead of just one, with extra lives. In Star Jacker, when you get hit, you lose a ship from your squad.

While having four ships provides extra firepower, it also makes it easier to get hit and harder to evade obstacles. When you’re low on ships, however, you gain more maneuverability. If you’re serious about the game and playing on PC, the ships’ movement seems more responsive and accurate with a keyboard than with a controller.
