Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story Remake
The Story So Far
Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story was originally a manga before being adapted into an anime. It was originally published from April 1994 to September 1999, and totaled 28 volumes. It was adapted into an anime series for the first time from 1996 to 1998, and then was remade again in 2023. As stated above, the first two seasons in the remake were subtitled Tokyo Prologue and Kyoto Disturbance to differentiate them.
MyAnimeList writes that the remake of Rorouni Kenshin is
…a remake of the original adaptation, utilizing new animation technology to make it appealing to both new viewers and returning audiences of the series. Supplementary modifications were also made to bring a more serious tone and depth to the story.
The remake has been fairly well-received, generally scoring between a 7 and an 8 across most sites. It did refresh the animation of the series and has made it look a lot more modern and clean, giving an otherwise classic anime a whole new look not dissimilar to what Sailor Moon Crystal did for its original 90s anime remake.
It is a historical anime that has had a large following since the original series premiered in the late 90s, and continues to be watched by fans both new and old through these newer seasons, despite more recent revelations of the problems behind its creator.
