New Open World Survival-Horror Game Revealed

An open-world survival horror game called I Hate This Place has been announced at the Future Games Show. The newly unveiled project stems from a partnership between three companies, including Bloober Team and Skybound Entertainment.

Skybound Entertainment is a California-based multimedia entertainment company founded in 2010 by David Alpert and The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman. In 2018, the group established an indie publishing label called Skybound Games.

During the spring 2025 edition of the Future Games Show, Skybound Entertainment revealed its latest game project in the form of I Hate This Place. Described as an open-world survival horror experience, I Hate This Place will be published by Broken Mirror Games, a new horror label from the Layers of Fear and Silent Hill 2 remake developer Bloober Team. The game itself is being made by Rock Square Thunder, a Polish studio founded by several former Bloober Team developers.

I Hate This Place Is a Comic Book Video Game—in More Ways Than One

I Hate This Place is an adaptation of an eponymous 2022 comic written by Kyle Starks and illustrated by Artyom Topilin. The game largely inherits Topilin’s artwork, which is rooted in an ’80s comic book aesthetic. The events of I Hate This Place begin with the protagonist, Elena, awakening an ancient malevolent force. This nightmarish entity manifests in several terrifying forms, including an ominous figure known as the Horned Man—the game’s primary antagonist who must be avoided at all costs.

At its core, I Hate This Place is an open-world survival game, meaning exploration and crafting are both crucial components of its gameplay loop. While Elena will be able to run from some encounters, she’ll also be expected to stand her ground sooner or later. On that note, the game promises intense firefights and melee combat, both of which reward quick thinking more than brute force. I Hate This Place will also have a dynamic day-and-night cycle that promises to be more than mere visual flair, as the time of day will also influence “gameplay dynamics.” What exactly that means remains to be seen, though it’s plausible that certain threats like the Horned Man will only appear during pre-determined periods.

I Hate This Place Coming in Q4 2025

While the first teaser trailer for I Hate This Place only includes Steam and Epic Games Store’s logos under the game’s platforms, Broken Mirror Games has confirmed that the upcoming title will also make its way to consoles, including the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. The open-world survival horror game is presently targeting a Q4 2025 release.
