Happy Gilmore 2’s Trailer Was One Long Throwback
Happy Gilmore 2 is going to see Sandler back in the titular role, with the film following the genuine length of time it has been since audiences last saw the unconventional golfer. Nearly three decades after his success, Gilmore will be stepping back onto the golf course, and various characters from the original will join him. His love interest Virginia Venit, played by Julie Bowen, was shown in the trailer, while Ben Stiller is reprising his role as Hal, and Christopher McDonald will be back as Gilmore’s long-time nemesis, Shooter McGavin.
Gilmore spends a lot of the trailer focusing on his glory years, and that is something that leans even more toward the idea of nostalgia. Whether it’s the conversations he has, the clothes Gilmore wears, or the manner in which he behaves, everything gears itself toward being similar to the original. It’s clear that Happy Gilmore 2 isn’t looking to break new ground with this movie in a way that would potentially make it too different from the original. However, what it does is guarantee fans can expect the same tone and style as what made Happy Gilmore such a hit in the first place.
Audiences Complain About Nostalgia In Hollywood
Nostalgia is something that has taken over the world of movies and television in the past decade, with revivals, reboots, and even new projects being linked to the past. Major franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe have even fallen into this trap by bringing past heroes via the multiverse, such as Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man or Wesley Snipes being Blade. These throwback moments obviously entertain those who were watching those specific things at the time, which is why fans of Happy Gilmore will be happy there are so many callbacks to the original movie. However, there has been a complaint generally within the moviegoing community that the industry is struggling to create fresh ideas and unique stories that can become modern classics.
Disney and Pixar are currently relying on sequels, with the likes of Toy Story 5 and The Incredibles 3 being in the works. There’s undoubtedly a lack of original content within the industry, with Hollywood seemingly focused on drawing audiences back into the cinema to see franchises they’re familiar with, such as Top Gun: Maverick. Nostalgia can be comforting to people as they know the world, the characters, and the tone, and even though originality is key to the industry, it is hard to deny bringing back the classics. Happy Gilmore 2 is going to be the latest example of that, but given that the trailer already has 4.2 million views on YouTube, it is hard to argue with Netflix’s mindset.
Happy Gilmore 2 Will Prove Nostalgia Is Needed
The trailer is a complete parade of moments from Happy Gilmore’s past, and that’s something that could have been risky from Netflix’s perspective. Considering so many people claim they’re sick of nostalgia and throwback content in the movie industry, this could go down poorly and be slated. While there are going to be negative reactions to any movie trailer, this has gone down particularly well. Nostalgia has its place in cinema, bringing back classic characters and opting not to overly tweak them. That’s what will happen with Happy Gilmore 2, and it is going to prove why it works.
There were cameos from modern-day stars such as Rory McIlroy and Bad Bunny, and there is no shortage of others planned throughout the movie, from other legitimate golfers to the likes of Eminem, Travis Kelce, and Becky Lynch. However, this movie will ultimately be a trip down memory lane, and given Sandler’s ability to place tons of heart into his best work, there’s a good chance it will go down well. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see many of the same jokes reprised or the story being somewhat similar in terms of the golf. However, if this trailer and its reception are anything to go by, then when Happy Gilmore 2 is released, there will be plenty of happy consumers streaming it on Netflix.
