The Hollywood Walk of Fame is little more than a tourist trap, but it is nice to see some of Tinseltown’s underappreciated artists get some much-deserved recognition. In that venerable tradition, one of horror cinema’s true greats is finally getting his due in the form of a Walk of Fame star.
Meticulously maintained by the self-financing Hollywood Historic Trust, pretty much any notable entertainment figure can get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame if they are sponsored with $75,000 upfront. This means anyone paying their publicist enough can get one, but it also means that those creatives who are deserving and somewhat unsung can get their due as well. As such, one titan of the horror genre will soon be added to the famed monument. Unsurprisingly located in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles, the Hollywood Walk of Fame is a landmark of large terrazzo-and-brass stars that encompass eighteen total blocks of sidewalk, the first of which were installed way back in 1960. At this point in time, there are more than 2,800 stars housed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with everyone from Charlie Chaplin and Snoopy to Thomas Edison and Ray Bradbury being enshrined.

According to an official press release from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, John Carpenter is finally getting a star on the famed Californian landmark. The statement indicates that Carpenter’s star will be the 2,806th one officially placed along the Walk of Fame and that the dedication ceremony will take place on Thursday, April 3, 2025 at 11:30 AM PT. Guest speakers have yet to be announced, but at least one or two famous friends usually show up to help celebrate one of their buddies. The Thing, Halloween, Escape From New York, They Live… Need We Go On?
It’s more shocking to hear John Carpenter doesn’t have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame than to hear he is being nominated for one. Running through his filmography reads like a must-watch list for any budding sci-fi/horror aficionado. His credits list is just cult hit after cult hit after cult hit: Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing, Christine, Starman, Big Trouble in Little China, Prince of Darkness, They Live… it just keeps going! Beginning with 1978’s Halloween and going on through 1988’s They Live, the man spent a whole decade basically defining an entire generation’s idea of what science fiction and horror are.
As if his storied film career weren’t enough, Carpenter is also a beloved musical artist and composer who worked on the soundtracks of the majority of his filmography. You know the beloved “Main Title” theme from Halloween that has been an indelible part of pop culture for nearly fifty years now? Yeah, John Carpenter wrote and performed that himself. Throw in the fact that he co-owns a comic book company, Storm King Comics, with his wife, and you can’t help but acknowledge Carpenter as an artist of the highest order.
In a few weeks, Carpenter will join the likes of Lassie, Kermit the Frog, and Godzilla on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The filmmaker is in good company, indeed.
