Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition showcases the myriad ways in which this sole letter-subtitled entry in an otherwise numerically-inclined series. From online functionality, to a somewhat decreased focus on its central narrative, to a wicked-cool, full-fledged, open world, the game is a one-of-a-kind gem. Another unique tidbit? You can own pets.

Not thrilled with your protagonist’s looks in Xenoblade Chronicles X? There’s a solution.
How can such a wonderful thing be achieved? This guide will get you up-to-speed on acquiring your very first furry friend, as well as the means through which you can obtain further fluffy folk. Read on to learn everything you need to know about the time-honored tradition of pet-gathering in Xenoblade Chronicles X.
How To Get A Pet In Xenoblade Chronicles X
The big thing to bear in mind here is that you’ll need to have completed Chapter 5. Now, this can be done in a relative handful of hours, though we’d recommend you don’t rush the game. Take it all in, complete other Affinity Missions, all that.
And speaking of which, you must engage in an Affinity Mission for your first pet. Namely, ‘Nine Lives’. To commence this quest, head to Barista Court in New Los Angeles’ Commercial District.
The following is readily available in your quest log, and Definitive Edition makes tracking easier than ever. But just in case you’d prefer to keep tabs here, or you’d simply like to know it all beforehand, here’s what’s in store for you in ‘Nine Lives’:
- Speak with Mathias at Barista Court to begin.
- Head to the Administrative District where you’ll find an unnamed NPC with a yellow icon. They’re over near Doug’s usual spot.
- Get to the Integrated Production Plant over in the Industrial District.
- Follow Mathias to Cliffside Beach, which is situated in the Primordia region.
- Collect some Kiran catnip, and hand it over to Mathias at the beach.
- Battle the Greedy Forfex here.
- Return to the Administrative District and seek out Mathias one more time.
Your reward for finishing ‘Nine Lives’ is an Abyssinian cat, which you can call forth back at the BLADE Barracks via its Customization Center. You should see a Pets category here!
Obtaining Further Pets
Now, how about those other pets? Well, once everything’s squared away, several pets will gradually go missing, and you can complete this quick quests at the Mission Board. Cheeky of them to go missing only after your first cat pops up.
In total, you can receive:
- The Abyssinian cat from ‘Nine Lives’
- A Calico cat
- A Silver Tabby cat
- A Beagle dog
- A Dalmatian dog
- A Labrador dog
The Purposes Of Pets
Having cats and dogs around the BLADE Barracks is, we would argue, its own reward. They liven the place up, after all. But for those seeking more tangible rewards, know that several Heart-to-Heart conversations are only available when certain pets have populated the place!
In this very particular sense, a small sliver of Xenoblade Chronicles X’s content is locked behind the acquisition of pets. It’s not much, but you won’t want to miss it, as Heart-to-Hearts are great little character moments.
