World Nobles or Celestial Dragons are a greater overarching group of antagonists in the One Piece series. They live lavish lives on Mary Geoise in the Red Line, territory all but stated to have been stolen from the near-extinct lunarians. Their wealth, safety, and satisfaction are supported by the World Government, which collects taxes from affiliated territories with the purpose of giving those funds to the nobles.

Despite having previously been united under the banner of the government, these pirates all have their own agendas.

Additionally, World Nobles are allowed to enslave, assault, and even murder whoever they please. The majority of the many nobles present are the descendants of nineteen families of the First Twenty, the rulers who formed the World Government. Except for the Nefertari family, these nobles abdicated their thrones to live on Mary Geoise. This list will look at the known World Noble families.

Figarland Family

Powerful Lunatics

  • Known Relatives: Garling, Shamrock, Shanks (Excommunicated)

The Figarland Family seems like a particularly prestigious clan of World Nobles, with its two currently known members in the upper echelons of its hierarchy. Figarland Garling is one of the Five Elders, the five nobles who are the public faces of leadership in the World Government, second only to its secret ruler, Imu. Garling became the Warrior God of Science and Defense, after the execution of Jaygarcia Saturn. He is, or at least previously was, the supreme commander of God’s Knights, the elite guard given authority over World Nobles, whilst also being charged with their protection. He is shown to be heavily bigoted and arrogant. In a competition to hunt God Valley’s indigenous population, he willingly incurred a penalty by starting early, believing the killing would be a solid handicap to put him on equal footing with his counterparts.

Garling’s son, Shamrock, is a commander of God’s Knights, who has the privilege of having an audience with the Five Elders. He is currently in Elbaf, attempting to control the giants stationed there by kidnapping their children. Both Garling and Shamrock are thought to be particularly formidable, especially in contrast to the typical World Nobles, who are shown to be weak and, oftentimes, out of shape, requiring constant protection and accompaniment.

Shanks is also a Figarland by blood, as he was also Garling’s son, but was effectively adopted by the Roger Pirates when discovered as a baby in a treasure chest found at God Valley. Shamrock claims he has visited Mary Geoise in the past, but has also renounced his status of his own volition. Shanks is currently the captain of the Red Hair Pirates, and is given the distinction of being one of the Four Emperors, pirates who are considered the biggest threats to the World Government at present.

Rosward’s Family

Stereotypically Upper Crust

  • Known Relatives: Rosward, Charlos, and Shalria

Rosward and his two children are among the first nobles introduced to the series. Their surname is unknown to the audience, and along with it, any significance it may have. That said, they set the standard tone for most World Nobles; greedy, arrogant, sadistic, but also very weak. They are all slave owners, who derive pleasure from just how terribly they treat them. They also wear special helmets when outside, to not breathe the same air as commoners do.

Rosward is noted for his “pirate captain collection”, suggesting that he favors slaves with a history. Ex-Captain Jean Bart was one of his slaves, before eventually joining the Heart Pirates. Charlos is at points portrayed as being particularly wasteful, even by the low standards of World Nobles. Rosward considers him a wasteful spender, which says something when one considers their boundless coffers. He is a practicing polygamist, having made mention of over five wives and continually collecting them as he so desires. He has notably made multiple efforts to enslave mermaids, suggesting a particular proclivity for them. Appropriately, for such a dislikable character, he has received many beatings at the hands of pirates like Luffy, Sai, and Leo, as well as one of his fellow World Nobles. This is especially noteworthy when one considers standing up to World Nobles is basically a death sentence. Shalria is shown to be sadistic, dehumanizing slaves to the point of murdering them for fun, being considered a routine activity.

Donquixote Family

The Black Sheep of Nobility

  • Known Members: Homing, Homing’s Wife, Doflamingo, Rosinante, Mjosgard (All Excommunicated), Shivercalero

The Donquixote Family were the previous rulers of Dressrosa, before abdicating that position, like many of their counterparts, to become World Nobles. Under various circumstances, most of their known members are either dead, excommunicated, or both.

Homing was a controversial figure among World Nobles, viewing himself as a human rather than a god. His unnamed wife and their second child, Rosinante, were similarly humble. Their eldest, Doflamingo, was not. Like most World Nobles, he reveled in the privilege his blood afforded him, and became a spoiled brat. Homing decided to abdicate his position, with his family losing their status alongside him.

Unfortunately, this subjected them to poverty and lynch mobs, who descended upon them due to their former status. Homing’s wife died of an illness during this time. Doflamingo notably impressed a small time gang with his Conqueror’s Haki, leading them to declare service to him. Their apparent leader, who would later be known as Trebol, encouraged Doflamingo to execute his father. Since then, he became an influential pirate with ties to the criminal underworld, and even the World Government through his enlistment into the Shichibukai. Largely protected from conventional law, he took over Dressrosa, and ruled it until he was defeated by the likes of Monkey D. Luffy and his allies. He has since been imprisoned, but maintains a burning hatred for the World Nobles.

One Piece: Smartest Villains In The Series

The following One Piece villains have the brains to accompany their brawn.

Rosinante, horrified by his brother killing their father, instead became a marine, after being taken care of by Sengoku. He was to spy on his brother, and act as a double agent. Unfortunately, Vergo, Doflamingo’s own mole in the marines, went unaccounted for, and exposed Rosinante, leading to Doflamingo killing him, much like their father.

Mjosgard, another Donquixote, was previously a slave owner. However, after traveling to Fish-Man Island to reclaim his slaves, he was instead heavily assaulted by them. However, Otohime, the Queen of Ryugu Kingdom, managed to reform him through her kindness, eventually leading him to renounce his past self and become the second World Noble to declare himself a human. This led Mjosgard to protect Otohime’s family once they visited Mary Geoise to attend the Levely. Unfortunately, Shirahoshi, Otohime’s daughter, was attacked by Charlos, who wished to enslave her. This led to Mjosgard, along with Sai and Leo, assaulting him for his attempts. Unfortunately, this action led Mjosgard to be executed by Garling, who reasoned that those who risk themselves to “protect scum” sink even lower.

Mjosgard’s father, Shivercalero, is the only surviving Donquixote known to still be a World Noble. Due to the actions of Homing, Mjosgard, and Doflamingo, the Donquixote family is seemingly something of a laughingstock to other World Nobles.

2

Shepherd Family

Leading Lambs To The Slaughter

  • Known Members: Ju Peter, Sommers

Little is known of the Shepherd Family as a unit. That said, their only two known members have fairly high authority. Ju Peter is a member of the Five Elders, noted to be the one who is physically the youngest looking. He is the Warrior God of Agriculture, and like his counterparts, obeys Imu to a tee. He is shown to concern himself with maintaining control over the world, and appropriately keeping the Void Century, when the World Government came to power under specific circumstances, hidden.

Peter’s relative, Sommers, is an elderly man, but due to the apparent arrested aging process of the Five Elders, it does not indicate exactly how old he is compared to Peter. Sommers is a member of God’s Knights, shown to be something of a flighty weirdo. He is often absentminded in his behavior, having been summoned to Elbaf while undressed and paying little mind to the fact. That said, he also keeps informed of the goings-on in the “lower world.” Alongside Killingham and Gunko, he was enlisted by Shamrock to capture the giant children of Elbaf, which they turned into a game, much like the Native Hunting Competition on God Valley.

1

Other Nobles

Implied Families and Others

  • Known Members: Imu, Warcury, V. Nusujuro, Mars, Saturn, Jalmack, Pluming, Killingham and Others
  • Known Affiliated Families/Surnames: Nerona, Topman, Ethanbaron, Marcus, Jaygarcia, Rimoshifu, and Manmayer

As mentioned prior, virtually every World Noble is thought to descend from nineteen families of the First Twenty, the royalty who formed the World Government in the first place. Presently, there are around ten family names associated with the World Nobles, yet the vast majority of them have only one relative attached. It is further unknown if they maintain the specific surnames of their ancestors who founded the government many years ago, although the existence of the Nefertari Family, the only one in the First Twenty who maintained their original throne, implies this is at least possible.

Except for the Shepherd and Garling families, those who joined the Five Elders (Jaygarcia Saturn, Ethanbaron V. Nusujuro, Topman Warcury, and Marcus Mars) currently have no known relatives who share their surnames. Similarly, obscured are the Rimoshifu and Manmayer families. Rimoshifu Killingham was recently introduced alongside Sommers as a member of God’s Knights. The Manmayer family had at least one female relative who participated in the Native Hunting Competition at God Valley years ago.

The Nerona Family was one of the First Twenty, led by Saint Imu. It is theorized by Sabo of the Revolutionary Army, that Saint Imu was made immortal by the Perennial Youth Operation the user of the Ope Ope no Mi can perform, at the cost of their own life. Sabo further posits that it is this same figure who currently rules the World Government in the shadows. Jewelry Bonney, the daughter of a World Noble who enslaved and wed Ginny, implies that others with Noble blood exist but are not given the same level of regard, perhaps due to them possessing the blood of slaves as well.

It also seems possible individuals can earn the rank of World Noble or some sort of equivalent, though not without effort. York, a satellite of Vegapunk based on his aspect of greed, betrayed her creator with the promise of becoming a World Noble, and currently serves under Garling. However, her exact status and its privileges are not made clear. Similarly, Gunko of God’s Knights is implied not to be of noble heritage, and pitches joining the ranks to Loki as an effective ascension to godhood. Yet the exact intricacies of joining this exclusive group are both unclear and likely very difficult.
