Summary

  • Assassin’s Creed Shadows surpasses two million players across all platforms.
  • It is almost the best-selling premium game on Steam right now.
  • It has now outperformed the launches of Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey.

There is a lot riding on Assassin’s Creed Shadows‘ success, but it seems that it’s stuck the landing. Just two days since its launch, Ubisoft has revealed that the long-awaited release has surpassed two million players across all platforms.

This is on top of Assassin’s Creed Shadows topping the Steam charts, currently only beaten by Counter-Strike 2. This makes it the best-selling premium game on the platform right now, a good start for a game that has to turn around Ubisoft’s ailing fortunes.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Is Outperforming Origins’ And Odyssey’s Launches

This isn’t bad going at all for a game that was surrounded by so much controversy. Ever since its reveal, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been one of the most prominent games to be targeted in the culture war and ‘anti-woke’ discourse, mostly centred around the fact that Yasuke is one of the protagonists.

This heated up at launch when it was revealed that there are optional romances, like in previous Assassin’s Creed games. However, it doesn’t appear to have hurt its performance too much. Indeed, long-term Assassin’s Creed fans appear to largely be enjoying the game, and it has very positive user reviews on Steam.

As for the critical reception, this was mostly positive too. There was a lot of praise for this recreation of Feudal Japan, as well as the writing of Yasuke and Naoe. However, there are complaints about bloat and repetitive gameplay, which we’ve come to expect from the Ubisoft formula.
