Preliminary FF14 7.2 patch notes reveal some very nice quality-of-life improvements for the critically acclaimed MMORPG. The next update for Final Fantasy 14 arrives Tuesday March 25, and will bring the next chapter of the Dawntrail story with it. While we’ll have to wait a little longer for the arrival of major features such as Cosmic Exploration and the Occult Crescent, which arrive over the coming months, there are some very welcome upgrades that will make your life easier across the entire game.
Before we start, it’s important to note that these preliminary FF14 patch notes don’t include the job balance changes teased during last week’s Live Letter 86. We’ll have to wait until closer to launch for those to be revealed, although we are expecting a damage buff for melee DPS and a much-needed nerf for the dominant Pictomancer. What we do get are a range of smaller tweaks, but they include changes that are among the most exciting the MMORPG has seen in a while.

As discussed by Yoshida during the Live Letter, you’ll now be able to call your mount while moving. “Only took us ten years,” he jokes. Alongside this comes the new ‘Jog’ status effect. Once your Sprint runs out, you’ll continue moving at a “more modest speed increase” that lasts for an unlimited duration. You can manually deactivate it, or it will turn off “when enmity is generated” (meaning any time you are pulled into combat).
What caught my eye in particular, however, is a change that has been greatly requested since it was implemented for the new Dawntrail dungeons. “After beginning a boss encounter in any dungeon introduced prior to patch 7.0, the shortcut warp will take players to the boss area’s entrance.” Of course, I would certainly never die mid-fight and need to make use of such a feature, but on the rare chance that it happens the removal of runbacks is a massive time saver.
Along with new emotes, you’ll now find ‘Tomescroll’ and ‘Study’ – permanently looping versions of ‘Tomestone’ and ‘Read’ that are perfect when you’re AFK. Icons for the Glamour Dresser will more clearly display when items can be used with the outfit glamour system. There are more gathering and fishing spots to be found, while crafters will benefit from a very welcome feature allowing you to batch-select required materials by quality. A range of extra house furnishings are up for grabs, including some based on contest design winners.
Beyond that are a wealth of graphical improvements for a wide range of gear and environments, including almost every major city, as the team continues its planned game-wide overhaul following the Dawntrail graphics update. Shadow quality has also been improved, and player character models have had some slight tweaks based on post-Dawntrail feedback.
Because of these model adjustments, you can claim yet another free FF14 Fantasia by heading to the Wandering Moogle in Old Gridania (found at X:10.7, Y:6.4 on your map). This will only be available until the launch of patch 7.3, so be sure to pick it up while you can. Photo mode also has some new stickers, along with improved depth of field and focal length settings.
Elsewhere, there are new Wondrous Tails prizes, and you’ll now have to complete the MSQ of the most recent expansion for high-level duties to appear in your requests. This isn’t a change that’ll affect most players, but if you’re new or are playing on a free trial account then it’s a welcome way to stop Khloe from giving you tasks you can’t yet complete. There are also more MGP rewards to be found at the Gold Saucer, including new Triple Triad cards and more opponents to discover.
As expected, the Expert Dungeon roulette has been stripped back and will now only include new 7.2 dungeon The Underkeep and its 7.1 counterpart, Yuweyawata Field Station. If you’re missing those chaotic Strayborough Deadwalk runs, you’ll find it alongside fellow level-100 duties Alexandria and Tender Valley in a newly added roulette category, Level Cap Dungeons.
The first tier of the Arcadion Raid and the Jeuno: The First Walk Alliance Raid are also now both rolled into their respective duty roulettes, which will award the new Allagan Tomestones of Mathematics. The bonus experience for running Alliance Raid roulettes has been increased, with the rewards from Endwalker’s Myths of the Realm series slightly lowered, which should encourage players to run roulettes rather than spam Aglaia to level alt jobs.
Finally, Square Enix addresses blacklist changes following the recent mod controversy. “In accordance with measures introduced in patch 7.2 to help prevent the identification of account IDs that are not displayed in-game, relevant saved client data has been reset.” As such, you’ll need to re-register previously blacklisted character names. “We apologize for any inconvenience caused and ask for your understanding as we introduce these measures.”
