Realistic Portrayals
Creating a realistic portrayal of the theme is always a great option. For example, the cake above sticks to the theme of Cherry Blossom. Rather than making a cherry blossom-inspired cake, Reddit user solis_eclipsim simply made a cherry blossom tree.
This is great for certain themes that have an associated object. Of course, there is no giant cherry blossom tree decoration, so you’ll need to piece it together from other decorations in the game. Overall though, if you have enough time (or are playing more casually), put your skills to the test and create a literal interpretation of the theme.

Monotone Color
First, let’s give a round of applause to motherNOOSE for making this phenomenal cake above! This is a wonderful example of a cake that sticks to one or two colors and still looks great. If you are looking to make something different, consider taking a page from this Reddit user’s book and creating a monotone cake.
You don’t have to stick with black and white; try doing something similar with any color that fits the theme. You can even change it up a little and create an accent color. If your cake is entirely pink, a gold/yellow border may be the perfect finishing touch.

Floating Decorations
Decorations can be moved up (or down) in a way that makes them look like they are floating. Take the cake above by PeachySeal28 as an example. The decorations here float above and around the cake, making it look like clouds, flying birds, and butterflies.

If you are unsure how to fit everything on the side or top of your cake, just add some floating elements! You can use the decorations as intended (such as butterflies functioning as butterflies), or you can use your creativity to make new floating objects by combining some items.

Floating Layers
Pretty much any part of your cake can be tweaked, so why not just make a second tier that floats? By raising up your second tier, you can create the floating effect, which looks quite magical. You can have both sections of the cake maintain a similar theme, or you can create a ‘cloud’ effect. This can be done by making the bottom tier white, with icing and decorations that look fluffy like clouds.

Can’t decide on what decoration should go on the cake? Rather than wasting time deciding what looks best, just use them all! Maximalist cakes may sound overwhelming, but if the decorations remain cohesive and organized, you can make a masterpiece.
The cake above really packs in the decorations. With a distinct color pallet and design style though, you can definitely tell that they were sticking to the Lunar New Year theme, which was executed perfectly. Don’t be afraid to load up your cake with decorations if the situation calls for it.

Repurposed Decorations
There are a limited amount of decorations in the game, which can leave you wondering how to achieve certain designs. Rather than leaving the decorations as is, try combining, resizing, and rotating them.
For example, in the image above, a Reddit user made a pumpkin on top of their cake by combining toppers and rotating them in such a way that it looks like a giant pumpkin. If you are looking for a certain item, don’t hesitate to combine other decorations to make it!

Separate Layer Designs
Lastly, consider making your layers distinct. Above, you can see a cake that has one bottom layer that is designed differently from the top two. In this situation, the theme was Beach Day; while the tiers are distinct, you can clearly get the sense of a sandy beach meeting water.
The player could have just done a blue cake, but these two design styles create some uniqueness without being too jarring. You can also use this design style if the theme you are given has different interpretations. This can make for an interesting cake that stands out among the rest.
If you are dealing with a more nature-focused theme (like a picnic), you can have a bottom layer serve as grass, while the top layer serves as another object (like a picnic basket).
