This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
One Piece chapter 1143 was absolutely phenomenal in more ways than one and it finally gave the fans a proper look at the Devil Fruit ability of Saint Sommers, one of the members of the Holy Knights. Being a Holy Knight, it isn’t a surprise that fans always expected for Sommers to have a very overpowered Devil Fruit ability.
Now, he’s finally shown what he’s truly capable of, and it goes without saying that his power, which belongs to the Paramecia type, is truly monstrous. With such power, Sommers will most definitely prove to be a very powerful adversary for whoever takes him on in combat later down the line.
Saint Sommers’s Devil Fruit — Iba Iba no Mi
- A Paramecia Type Of Devil Fruit
- The Power To Create Thorns
Saint Sommers possesses a Paramecia type of Devil Fruit and it was finally revealed to the fans in One Piece chapter 1143. That said, this ability was first teased right upon his arrival. In One Piece chapter 1140, fans couldn’t help but focus on the fact that Sommers had a thorny hilt on his sword, which made a lot of the fans believe that his powers are connected to thorns in some way.
The more you love, the more you hurt each other. — Saint Sommers
As it turns out, the fans were absolutely spot on and One Piece chapter 1143 finally revealed his full ability to the users. Saint Sommers has the power of the Iba Iba no Mi, which is a powerful Paramecia ability. This power allows Saint Sommers to produce thorns, and while that may look like a rather lame ability on paper, the unique twist that Oda added to it makes it that much more special.
On the basic level, it can be said that Sommers can produce thorns from his vicinity or upon touch. For instance, Sommers should theoretically be able to turn his sword into a thorny blade. But, for now, that remains unknown.
The Power Of Thorns And How They Work
In One Piece chapter 1143, fans saw Saint Sommers’s Iba Iba no Mi at work and it is truly fascinating. His Devil Fruit allows him to assign a target and if someone dares to touch his targets, they’re immediately set upon by powerful thorns. Although this ability seems rather mundane, it most certainly isn’t, and that is because the ability itself is connected to love.
As Sommers put forward in the previous chapter, to know love is to wound one another, which means that his thorns are there to pose an ordeal to those who love from their targets. The stronger the love for the target, the more powerful and painful the thorns will become.
What’s your deepest fear, Gunko? — Sommers
As seen in One Piece chapter 1143, it was very difficult for anyone to come even remotely close to the Giant children and this was because their love for the kids kept them from rescuing them, which is truly ironic.
How Strong Is Saint Sommers Of the Holy Knights?
A Very Powerful Fighter
So far, fans haven’t seen the full strength of Saint Sommers, but it can safely be assumed that his Devil Fruit power is very unique. Added to that is the fact that he seems to be a capable wielder of the blade, and he most definitely has strong Haki as well. Saint Sommers will turn out to be an individual around the same power level as the Admirals, or maybe slightly below their level of strength. His Devil Fruit ability, when combined with his swordsmanship, Haki, and everything else, should make him a top-tier fighter and one who will likely go onto face Zoro in combat.
One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus apps. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1143, is set to be March 23, 2025.
