Severance EP Ben Stiller Promises Shorter Wait For Season Three

Severance just ended its second season on Apple TV+, and while fans are excited for another installment, there’s some apprehension about the next one taking on one of season two’s most disappointing traits. Now, Executive Producer Ben Stiller is making it clear that isn’t the case.

Severance was a massive hit when it premiered on Apple TV+ at the start of 2022, with the genre-blending psychological thriller getting fans hooked with its unique premise, black comedic stylings, and a stellar cast of capable talent. With Adam Scott in the lead role and Stiller serving as EP, the Dan Erickson-led show would sail to critical acclaim and massive fan support with relative ease. Thanks to this success, Apple TV+ didn’t need to think twice about a second season for the show, but the next installment still took three years to materialize on the streamer and only finally premiered back in January.

While Stiller has confirmed that Severance season three is already a sure thing, viewers have been a bit wary of the third season following the second’s disappointing release schedule. Fortunately for those worried fans, Stiller weighed in to dispel that fear during a recent appearance on the New Heights podcast. When host Travis Kelce asked if he’d have to wait another three years for the next season, Stiller vehemently disagreed with the notion. “No, no, the plan is not—definitely not,” Stiller responded. “No, the plan is not, and hopefully, we’ll be announcing what the plan is very soon. That will not be that.” This is great news and a solid confirmation that the show won’t leave fans hanging for another inordinate amount of time, coming at just the right juncture to maintain the excitement of the season two finale.

It’s been firmly established that the series has a concrete direction already laid out for its future and railings in place to keep it there, including Stiller’s strategy of avoiding Severance fan theories to maintain the creative vision of the show. This will also factor into the speed of the show’s development, as minimal changes will be made during production thanks to things being ironclad well in advance of filming. This is even more important for the show’s long-term success, as there was a noticeable impatience among certain segments of the fanbase during the second season’s slow burn, an objection that wouldn’t have been an issue at all if it hadn’t taken three years for fans to get back to Lumon and the characters. A much less grueling wait for a third installment will save the show from this sort of time-based criticism, as well as making sure everyone who’s invested now is still on board when it releases.

Stiller’s declaration is a good sign of things to come, which might just be bad things in store for Mark and the gang. Severance might be the best show on Apple TV+ and also benefits from being a well-balanced addition to the platform’s top billings, pretty much ensuring that the show will make it to the logical endpoint of the showrunner’s vision. Fans can rest assured that the third season is coming and that they won’t have to muster up excitement for it in 2028, and the platform can receive the full force of the show’s viewer attraction.
