Starting in 2026, the LEGO Group and The Pokemon Company International will produce Pokemon-themed LEGO sets for the first time. This will be the third major Nintendo franchise to be adapted into LEGO form after LEGO Super Mario debuted in 2020 and LEGO Legend of Zelda debuted in 2024. In coordination with the partnership’s announcement, the companies released a brief trailer depicting four flat LEGO bricks combining to form Pikachu’s iconic yellow and brown tail and electrocuting a LEGO Pokemon sign. While no sets have currently been unveiled, fans can still predict what some of the first LEGO Pokemon sets could be based on game releases, anniversaries, and prior depictions in Mattel’s Mega Pokemon toy line.

The History and Potential Influence of the Mega Pokemon Toy Line
In 2004, Mega Bloks Inc. released the first major building block toys of Pokemon in the form of the Pokemon Build ‘n Battle toy line. Released two years after the initial debut of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire and the same year as Pokemon Emerald’s Japan debut, the Build ‘n Battle toy line only featured three sets of Pikachu/Pichu, Torchic/Combusken and Mudkip/Swampert, each with their own plastic Poke Ball. A fourth set of Treecko/Grovyle was advertised but never released before the toy line was quickly canceled. After Mattel acquired Mega Brands in 2014, Mega Construx would collaborate with The Pokemon Company to begin producing the Mega Construx Pokemon toy line in 2017.
The first Mega Construx Pokemon set teased was a 198-piece Charizard set with a small Great Ball accessory. Other Mega Construx Pokemon sets released in 2017 include but are not limited to:
- a small Poke Ball series featuring Abra, Eevee, Machop, Magikarp, Pikachu, and Zubat
- a Squirtle Vs. Charmander set, a Snorlax and Munchlax evolution set
- an Onix Super Battle diorama featuring Ekans, Meowth, Onix, Pikachu, Porygon, and Staryu
Over the course of the next eight years, the Mega brand released numerous Pokemon sets featuring Pokemon from all nine generations of Pokemon games. Some displayed scenes and characters from the Pokemon anime, such as the Ash & Pikachu: Path to Victory set.
LEGO Pokemon Potential First Wave Sets Based on Past Mega Pokemon Releases
Based on how both the Mega Bloks and Mega Construx Pokemon sets heavily featured Pikachu, the original starters, and new starters released at the time, LEGO may release a few sets depicting Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle alongside the new starters for the tenth generation of Pokemon games. Pokemon Legends Z-A will add one more major game to Generation 9 near the end of 2025, making it probable that the next mainline entry of Pokemon games will release sometime in 2026 on the Nintendo Switch 2. LEGO Pokemon sets of the original and latest starters and their evolutions could help increase sales of the latest Pokemon games and cards as well as increase viewership of the latest season of the Pokemon anime.
290 Pokemon sets have been released under Mattel’s Mega Brands toy line, excluding the original four sets released in Mega Bloks’ Pokemon Build ‘n Battle toy line.
Potential LEGO Pokemon Sets for Pokemon’s 30th Anniversary
February 27, 2026 will mark the 30th anniversary of Pokemon Red and Green and the overall Pokemon brand. While Nintendo and Game Freak will likely release a few Pokemon games and a ton of Pokemon merchandise to celebrate Pokemon’s 30th anniversary, LEGO and The Pokemon Company should capitalize on the anniversary to produce several sets celebrating the entire series. Nintendo and LEGO are already collaborating to produce a LEGO Game Boy in late 2025, but the companies could release a successor LEGO set recreating the original Pokemon Game Boy cartridges or iconic scenes from the original games in 2026. These sets could be intended for adult LEGO collectors, similar to the LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System and the pixelated LEGO Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi sets.
Since 2026 could not only mark the 30th anniversary of the Pokemon franchise but also see the debut of the tenth generation of Pokemon games, LEGO could release an anniversary line of series depicting some of the most iconic moments from each major Pokemon generation. For example, LEGO could release sets depicting the capture of Mewtwo, Ho-Oh and the Bell Tower, Rayquaza battling Groudon and Kyogre, Cynthia’s Champion battle, the revival of Reshiram and Zekrom, Mega Charizard X, Ash’s Alola Championship victory, and more. Sets like these would not only feature several fan-favorite Pokemon and events, but showcase the evolution of the Pokemon brand from the 1990s through the 2020s.
