A Pokemon fan has shared a piece of artwork giving Bulbasaur a number of mushroom-themed makeovers. The clever Pokemon designs take inspiration from real-world mushrooms, with some of the Bulbasaur ending up looking a lot more exotic and unique than others.
As the very first Pokemon in the original Pokedex, Bulbasaur is an icon in the Pokemon series. Like Charmander and Squirtle, Bulbasaur is fondly thought of by many since it’s one of the original starter Pokemon, and due to its cute design and personality in the anime. While many find the original starter designs to be practically perfect, fans also like reimagining them in new, creative ways.

Now, prolific Pokemon fan artist MunchyKu has shared some of their latest designs, which reimagine Bulbasaur by crossing it with nine different real-world mushrooms. Due to the influence of the mushrooms, most of the Bulbasaur have vibrant recolors, while their bulbs have been replaced with the mushrooms. Some of the mushroom Bulbasaur resemble their original forms, but others look dramatically different due to the nature of the mushrooms on their backs. For example, the Ink Cap mushroom Bulbasaur has shaggy scales, while the Pink Oyster Bulbasaur have wavy caps. In all, the artist identified the Bulbasaur as being based off of Bleeding Tooth, Witch’s Hat, Blue Mycena, Mycena Subcyanocephala, Mycena Chlorophos, Cortinarius iode, Ink Cap, Pink Oyster, and Amanita Muscaria mushrooms.
Pokemon Fans React to Bulbasaur Mushroom Redesigns
The community at large is responding well to the mushroom-themed Bulbasaur fanart, with many complimenting the artist and sharing which of the designs are their favorites. Some recommended additional mushroom fusions to add to the list, like a Lion’s Mane Bulbasaur, while one suggested crossing over Bulbasaur with The Last of Us by merging Bulbasaur with the cordcyeps fungus from the Naughty Dog game. Another fan asked about the typing of the Bulbasaur, wondering if they would all stick with the usual Grass/Poison typing. However, MunchyKu indicated that they might not all be, since not all the mushrooms featured are actually poisonous. Pink Oyster mushrooms, for example, are edible.
This isn’t the first instance of MunchyKu redesigning Bulbasaur, with the classic Pokemon being one of the artist’s common subjects. Previously, the artist crossed Bulbasaur with holidays, boba drinks, and even space themes. It will be interesting to see if they produce more mushroom Bulbasaur in response to fan requests, or if they move on to a new idea entirely.
