Nintendo Switch Online Is Adding 4 Classic SNES Games

Summary

  • Four Koei Tecmo strategy games, including Nobunaga’s Ambition and Romance of the Three Kingdoms, added to SNES app for Nintendo Switch Online.
  • Players must unify Japan in Nobunaga’s Ambition and control rulers in Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4.
  • March 28 sees release of new games, including removal of Super Soccer; future game additions to Switch Online service remain unclear.

On March 20, Nintendo revealed that four Koei Tecmo strategy games will be added to the Nintendo Switch Online SNES app, including two titles from the Nobunaga’s Ambition series. The other two games joining the Nintendo Switch Online service are Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4: Wall of Fire, and Uncharted Water: New Horizons.

Originally released on PCs in 1986 before making its way to the SNES in 1993, Nobunaga’s Ambition game puts players into a historical simulation based on the 16th-century conquests of military leader Oda Nobunaga. Nobunaga’s Ambition tasked players with unifying Japan and fending off enemy forces seeking to take over the land. Nobunaga’s Ambition was followed up with several sequels, including 2022’s Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening. Pokemon fans may be familiar with the franchise, as Koei Tecmo and The Pokemon Company teamed up to release Pokemon Conquest on the DS in 2012.

Rumor: Possible Switch 2 Screen Details Leak

A new social media rumor about Nintendo’s upcoming console may shed some light on the system’s handheld gaming capabilities.

Along with the first Nobunaga’s Ambition title for the SNES, three more Koei Tecmo games will join the growing list of SNES games for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers to enjoy. Nobunaga’s Ambition: Lord of Darkness, Uncharted Waters: New Horizons, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4: Wall of Fire will also be available on Friday, March 28. Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will download a small update once the games are released for the SNES app. Both the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and the Nobunaga’s Ambition series are traditional, slower-paced strategy games that require players to coordinate their armies and recruit soldiers and peasants alike to the cause.

Nintendo Switch Online Adds Classic Koei Tecmo Strategy Games

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4: Wall of Fire gives players control of up to 38 rulers and different weapons like catapults and battering rams to destroy enemy fortifications. By comparison, Uncharted Waters: New Horizons is set on the open seas, and players can pick six different protagonists who each have their own stories to tell.

The addition of these four Koei Tecmo strategy games will cap off a busy month for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. On March 7, Donkey Kong and Mario’s Picross were added to the Game Boy app. However, March 28 will also see players lose access to one SNES game, as Super Soccer will be removed from the service. It is unclear if Super Soccer will return to Nintendo Switch Online in the future.

Given that the North American version of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4: Wall of Fire game turns 30 in July 2025, its inclusion alongside other Koei Tecmo classics is timely. With the Nintendo Switch 2 right around the corner, only time will tell what games Nintendo and its partners will add in future updates to the Switch Online service.
