There might be a main quest that takes you on multiple assassinations in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but while you do this quest, you’ll encounter plenty of other content on the map. One of these contents is known as Kofun, and these can be found in every province at certain locations.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows – Level Up And Knowledge Ranks Guide
Assassin’s Creed Shadows has a rather unique levelling-up system with two points to consider – here’s how it works.
Every Kofun offers a unique set of puzzles to solve, and Makino Kurumazuka is one of the most challenging ones. While you can find this one quite early in the game, you won’t be able to enter it until you reach a specific part of the main story.
How To Find And Enter Makino Kurumazuka Kofun
Makino Kurumazuka is one of the two Kofuns that you can find in the Izumi Settsu province, which is also where you start the game after the prologue ends. You can find it by heading to the northeast section of the province, right above where Yawata Plains is written on the map.
Once you get to this Kofun, you’ll see a breakable wall blocking your path down the stairs, and you can only open it after you unlock Yasuke by progressing through the main story. Once you have Yasuke, switch to him and you can carry one of the explosive barrels at the top of the Kofun to the breakable wall.
Simply shoot the explosive with your bow or teppo once you have it near the wall and the entry will open up.
How To Get The Legendary Chest In Makino Kurumazuka Kofun
Once you break the wall with Yasuke and the explosive barrel, make sure to continue into this Kofun with him as Naoe can’t beat the puzzles within. After entering, you’ll already notice the first rare chest on the left side with a blocked path in front, and you can’t unblock this path.
While you can already see the legendary chest right behind it, you have to follow this path through the Kofun to get it:
-
-
Head back to where you found the rare chest and you’ll see a path in front of it. Go there and move the box forward to see another path on your right. Go forward on this path and turn left to find another open area.
In this area, you’ll find two more breakable walls, one up the stairs and one on your right as you enter. Start by moving the box in front back into this room, which will reveal a path going down.
-
-
Go through this path and you’ll find two explosive barrels on the other side. Use one of these barrels to explode the wall in the same room and then the next one to explode the second wall up the stairs, opening the way forward.
If you’re out of arrows, you can find some on high ground in the same room as the barrels.
-
-
In the newly-opened path, you’ll see two ways. Go left first to get a normal chest and then head to the room on the right path. Here, jump down in the water and go up on the other side to follow the path to the left.
Once you get to the next open area, break the wooden crates on your right to reveal a couple more explosive barrels. You can use these barrels on the breakable wall past a small jump in the next part.
Make sure to keep your distance from the barrels as Yasuke can take quite a bit of damage if he’s close during the explosion.
-
-
In the next area, jump down to the middle lower portion and you’ll find another movable box on your right. Move the box all the way back out and connect it to the opposite side of where you jumped down from.
Before going up to the other side, head back to the area being blocked by this box to find your second rare chest in this Kofun.
-
-
Take the next path by heading up the stairs and reach the next room to see three exits: one to the left with a movable box, one high up in the front with a breakable wall, and one to the left with a non-movable box.
Start by moving the box in the middle all the way to the entrance that you came from. After that, move the box on the left out into this room and connect it to the high wall in the front.
-
-
Go through the path opened on the left, which will lead you to the room that was blocked by the non-movable box. Pick up the explosive barrel here and take it back to the main room through the same path.
Line yourself up with the box near the high wall and throw it on the box first. Then, you can jump on the box and throw it to the breakable wall before exploding it.
Once this wall is broken, you simply have to follow the path for a bit more and you can jump down to the legendary chest.
After getting the legendary chest in this room, you can simply move the two boxes on the right side and take the stairs up, leading you directly outside the Kofun.
Makino Kurumazuka Kofun Rewards
As soon as you enter the Makino Kurumazuka Kofun, you’ll get the first rare chest, which gives you a Defense Warrior Headwrap. You can get another rare chest in this Kofun that gives Defender Clothing. Moreover, you can get various smaller chests around the place that give you some of these random rewards:
- Low-tier weapons and armor for both characters
- Valuables to sell to merchants
- Upgrade materials for the character gears
- and Mon
Finally, you get the legendary chest at the end that not only completes the Kofun and gives you a Knowledge Point, but also the Blush of the Earth bow and Extend Clear Mind engraving, which as the name suggests, extends the Clear Mind ability’s duration by five seconds.
The level of this bow will either be higher or the same level as your current account.
