Baldur’s Gate 3 director Swen Vincke recently revealed that Balatro is his 2024 Game of the Year. Balatro has been widely successful since its release, so it’s not entirely surprising that the Baldur’s Gate 3 director loved the poker-inspired game.
Released in 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3 has received more GOTY awards than any other title, winning big at five major award shows: the BAFTAs, the D.I.C.E. Awards, Game Developers Choice Awards, the Golden Joystick Awards, and The Game Awards. Having directed one of the most successful games of all time puts Vincke in a unique position, as players are already eagerly expecting the next game developed by Larian Studios.

Now, Vincke has revealed that Balatro is his Game of the Year for 2024, a surprising choice considering that the director has worked on RPGs for his entire career. Vincke revealed his love for Balatro on social media after the poker-inspired card title was named Game of the Year during the Game Developers Choice Awards, saying that he was happy to see that other developers also agreed on Balatro’s high quality.

Curiously, solo game developer LocalThunk never imagined that Balatro would be so successful. Despite losing Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024 to Astro Bot, Balatro won Best Mobile Game, Debut Indie Game, and Best Independent Game at the competition, along with even more awards from many others. According to LocalThunk, however, he was completely surprised to see the title gain so much traction, as it was originally just a small game that was developed for playing with friends.
Beyond being a critical hit, Balatro was also a major financial success. Data from December 2024 reveals that Balatro sold over 3.5 million copies, scoring a huge amount of money for its solo developer. At the moment, Balatro merchandise is also on sale, such as an official Balatro card deck, which comes with the standard 52 cards and four Jokers from the game.
Baldur’s Gate 3, on the other hand, sold over 15 million copies, and gamers are currently awaiting its last major update, which does not have an official release date yet. Baldur’s Gate 3’s Patch 8 will bring 12 subclasses to the game, as well as introduce the eagerly awaited Photo Mode. The patch is already available for gamers who participate as stress testers, but most of the fanbase will still likely have to wait a few weeks before they can finally play this version of the popular D&D-inspired title.
