In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, players will meet several important allies over the course of the game, many of which become available as summons in combat. This feature calls back to some of the franchise’s earlier installments, when legends like Ezio could call on members of the ‘Brotherhood’ to help in a fight. In Shadows, some of these allies are not easy to find, requiring players to really lean in to exploration and completing side-content. Many players will also wonder whether there is any way to upgrade allies once you recruit them, especially as combat increases in difficulty. In this guide, we’ll answer that very question, and show you how and where you can train allies in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Where to Upgrade Allies in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Get Your First Ally in AC Shadows:
The first ally you can recruit in Assassin’s Creed Shadows is Yaya. This monk is a capable warrior, who mostly focuses on hand-to-hand, close-quarters combat. To recruit Yaya, you’ll need to complete the “Stray Dogs” mission. This mission takes place very early in the game, and is almost impossible to miss.
While at the Hideout, Yaya will ask you to go after Tetsuo, a young novice who has stolen something of great importance to Yaya. Once you complete the mission, and convince Yaya to be merciful, she will officially join the League as an ally you can summon in combat.
Construct the Dojo
Once you have an ally recruited, you’ll want to go to the Hideout and enter Build Mode. To do this, you can either walk up to the model in the main Hideout building, or simply hold Y/Triangle when you see the ‘Improve Hideout‘ prompt appear whole on the Hideout grounds. In the main improvement window, press X/Square to enter the build system.
You’ll find the Dojo in the bottom right corner of the ‘Main Rooms’ section of the Build menu. The Dojo requires the following materials:
- Crops: 350
- Wood: 260
- Minerals: 90
Once you have your Dojo built, you will unlock the ability to train your allies up to the Initiate rank. You will also be able to upgrade the Dojo twice. Each upgrade requires the following materials:
Dojo Level 2: Two Allies can assist you instead of one.
- Crops: 470
- Wood: 350
- Minerals: 120
Dojo Level 3: Allies can be trained up to Veteran rank.
- Crops: 700
- Wood: 520
- Minerals: 170
How to Upgrade Allies in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Kakurega & Dojo Ally Board:
Once you have at least one ally, and the Dojo built, you will be ready to begin upgrading – or training, as it is called in-game – your allies. You can actually do this in two different locations. The first is obviously the Dojo, but you can also train your allies at any unlocked Kakurega as well. This is because both locations allow you to manage allies at the Ally Board.
In the Dojo, you’ll see a large version of the board on the shorter wall to the right when you enter the building. Approach the board to ‘Manage Allies.’ You’ll find a smaller version of the board at every Kakurega.
Training Allies:
To train your allies, visit one of the ally boards, where, upon interacting, you’ll be greeted with the main ally menu. Hover over the ally you want to train, then select the prompt to ‘Manage Ally‘ in the lower right corner. In the next menu, you’ll see a list of abilities on the right of the screen. Each time you upgrade an ally, you’ll gain access to one new ability.
Training your allies requires Mon, the in-game currency. If you have enough Mon to train your ally, you’ll see a prompt in the lower right corner of the screen.
The process will work the exact same whether you use the ally boards at the Dojo, or a Kakurega.
Remember, you’ll need to upgrade your Dojo to level 3 before you can reach the Veteran rank with any ally.
