Taking on the castles and forts in Assassin’s Creed Shadows can be tricky. You’ll come up against Guardians, Samurai, and bosses that’ll have loads of health and pack a punch. Therefore, you’ll need to prepare as much as you can before heading into the challenges.

On your way to castles, you may see Shrines at the side of paths. You can interact with them, but it’s not immediately clear what they do. Before we explain exactly what they do, it’s worth you praying at them whenever you can.
Shrine Buffs, Explained
When you spot a small shrine at the side of a path, you’ll be able to press triangle if you’re on PlayStation or Y if you’re on Xbox to pray at it.
When you do, whatever character you’re using will pray and a combat buff will be applied to you. A notification will pop up in the top right of the screen to tell you what the buff you’ve just been granted is. It can be anything from a buff to critical chance to your overall health.
Those buffs will only last a short period of time – usually enough for you to make it to a castle and start fighting to make the most of the buff.
You cannot stack Shrine Buffs. Once you pray at a Shrine again, the buff you have will be replaced by a new one.
How To Upgrade Shine Blessings
To make those Shrine Blessings even more useful, you can unlock a new building at your Hideout to improve them. That is the Jinja, so build it whenever you can. That building costs:
- 690 Crops
- 510 Wood
- 170 Minerals
- 1800 Mon
With it unlocked, all Shrine Blessing buffs will now last 15 minutes, giving you more time to make the most of them. You can then get new ones whenever you stumble across a new mini shrine.
