If you’ve ever played any of the other Assassin’s Creed RPGs, you might go into Assassin’s Creed Shadows thinking you know what to expect. That would be unwise, as there’s actually quite a lot that’s been changed.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Isn’t Too Big To Fail

Ubisoft’s open-world game needs to be really good.

One key example of this is the more involved levelling-up system. Not only will you need to get XP for upgrade points, you’ll also need to actively explore the world and engage in activities.

Levelling Up And Mastery Points

The first part of Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ levelling-up system is one that’ll be familiar to anyone who has played an RPG. As you complete missions, kill enemies, discover locations, and more, you’ll be awarded with XP that will go towards increasing Naoe and Yasuke’s level. Naoe and Yasuke share all of the awarded experience points, so you don’t need to worry about one going under levelled.

Every time you reach a new level, you’ll be given a basic stat increase for things like damage and health and awarded some Mastery Points. These Mastery Points are used in the “Mastery” part of the menu to unlock new skills for both Yasuke and Naoe. Both have six skill trees each based on their weapons and individual playstyles.

Certain side quests and activities also reward Mastery Points as well as XP, so they’re well worth doing if you want to improve Naoe and Yasuke.

However, when you go on the Mastery menu, you might notice that a lot of the skills are greyed out. This is where the next part of the system comes into play – Knowledge Ranks.

Knowledge Points And Ranks

An explanation of Knowledge Points in Assassin's Creed Shadows.

To gain access to higher-level abilities, you’re going to need to put some time into Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ world and engage in some of its side activities. Doing so will reward you with Knowledge Points that go toward increasing your Knowledge Rank. Once you’ve reached a new Knowledge Rank, you’ll be able to purchase the skills that are included in that section.

To gain Knowledge Points, you’ll need to take part in activities that are marked in orange on the map. These include Kuji-Kiri as Naoe, Kata as Yasuke, finding Lost Pages, paying respect to Shrines in a temple, looting a chest in tombs, and completing the various “Paths of” activties. Completing these activities gives you Knowledge Points, so they’re well worth doing.

The easiest way to gain Knowledge Points is by finding Lost Pages. Simply play as Naoe and you’ll be able to easily reach them all and gain some Knowledge Points.

As with Mastery Points, these Knowledge Points and Ranks are shared between characters, even if they can be spent individually on Yasuke and Naoe. The point of this is to reward the player for engaging with the world and not just speeding through the story. The rewards are well worth it too, as many of the best abilities are hidden in the higher Knowledge Ranks.
