Summary

  • Not all hunters in Solo Leveling are invincible; C-rankers like Yoon Kijoong, Goo Juntae, and Go Myung-Hwan are strong but underrated.
  • The C-rank hunters have unique abilities such as incredible defense and fire magic manipulation.
  • Characters like Cho Kyuhwan, Song Chi-Yul, and Hwang Dongsuk show distinct combat styles, moral values, and power dynamics within the series.

In Solo Leveling, hunters from different backgrounds and walks of life experience an awakening sometime in the past, following which they gained abilities to fight magic beasts living in mysterious Gates. Depending on their rank, these people became eligible to join a guild or a raid team to make a living.

The series introduces many high-ranking hunters who seem invincible and have amassed a huge influence in society. But not all hunters are the same. There are also low-ranking hunters who regularly put their lives on the line to earn more money, whether legally or illegally. Among them, C-rankers occupy a unique position, as they are much stronger than E-rank hunters but weaker than B-rankers. Quite a few of them appear in Solo Leveling, but these are perhaps the strongest.

Yoon Kijoong

A Survivor of the Red Gate Disaster

  • Webtoon Debut: Chapter 50
  • Anime Debut: Left Out of the Anime Adaptation

Yoon Kijoong was one of the few low-ranked hunters who had the fortune of being grouped with Sung Jinwoo when Kim Chul decided to abandon weak hunters in the Red Gate. Being a Tanker-class C-ranker, his probability of surviving the incident was surprisingly low if he had gone with the raid leader.

Kijoong’s abilities are unknown, but it’s fair to assume that they must be defense-related, considering his class. As a hunter associated with the White Tiger Guild, he was likely a somewhat strong C-ranker.

  • Anime Debut: Episode 5

Goo Juntae was an arrogant C-ranker. He was a Lizard who got involved in criminal activities in dungeons sometime in the past. Goo looked down on other people, which eventually became a reason for his cruel end. He tried to intimidate Sung Jinwoo, but was immediately decapitated by him.

After he returned from the mission, he was contacted by Yoo Jinho’s father, Yoo Myung-Han, to learn what had transpired during the mission. Although not much is known about his abilities, it can be assumed that Go was a decently strong C-ranker since he worked for one of Korea’s best guilds.

4

Lee Chul-Jin

Hwang Dongsuk’s Raid Team Member

  • Webtoon Debut: Chapter 19
  • Anime Debut: Episode 5

Lee Chul-Jin was an accomplice of Hwang Dongsuk and a morally bankrupt human being who used his hunter powers for personal gain. His criminal activities were exposed when he, along with his team, decided to kill Jinwoo and Jinho during a dungeon raid.

Lee’s weapon of choice was daggers, but he was not that strong. When Sung attacked Hwang Dongsuk’s raid team, he easily killed Chul-Jin.

3

Versatile Mage-Class Hunter

Despite being just a C-rank mage, Cho Kyuhwan was surprisingly good at manipulating fire and using it to his advantage in combat. Although Jinwoo was not focused when Cho targeted him, his powers were still surprisingly good for a hunter of his class. Kyuhwan had also demonstrated that he could control fire with remarkable precision. Based on his abilities, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to presume that he was one of the best fire magic users in his class.

2

Song Chi-Yul

Survivor of the Double Dungeon Incident

  • Webtoon Debut: Chapter 1
  • Anime Debut: Episode 1

Song Chi-Yul is a mage-type hunter who is proficient at using fire magic. As an experienced hunter, he has frequented low-rank dungeons many times and has at least led one of the missions. Since he is driven by a sense of duty and takes his moral responsibilities seriously, Chi-Yul is respected by his peers.

I’d like to spend what I have left contributing to society.

Song is also a master swordsman and has the skill set to go toe-to-toe against people much younger than him. Chi-Yul demonstrates his proficiency when Kang Taeshik goes on a murderous rampage during a seemingly ordinary and safe mission. Despite being just a C-ranker, he shows no hesitancy in putting his life on the line to protect his comrades, which speaks volumes about his character. Song may not have amassed a huge fortune or influence while working as a hunter, but he left a lasting impression on the people who worked alongside him.

1

Hwang Dongsuk

Hwang Dongsoo’s Brother

But when Sung survives and reveals his true powers, Hwang is no match for him.
