The wait for one of Netflix’s most anticipated shows is almost over as Stranger Things Season 5 is set to make a huge comeback in 2025. The eagerly-awaited fifth and final installment has almost reached its boiling point as fans prepare themselves for what looks to be the show’s most emotional and tragic season yet. In a bid to get fans equipped for what’s in store, Netflix’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos teases fans about season 5’s “thrill ride” and how they will likely need a box of tissues for its intense finale.

Created by Matt and Ross Duffer, the hit fantasy-horror show returned for an exciting season 4 in 2022 to further play out the story of Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven and her friends in Hawkins, Indiana, as they take on the sinister forces of the Upside Down. Netflix announced that production wrapped on Stranger Things season 5 in late December 2024, and although there isn’t an exact release date for its final season, the Duffer brothers revealed that they are ahead of schedule, which is a massive relief for impatient fans. Now, nine years after it welcomed viewers into its horror-infested universe in 2016, fans will finally see how Stranger Things’ very last season will pan out for its beloved main characters.

Netflix CEO Hints at Stranger Things Season 5’s Emotional ‘Thrill Ride’

Stranger Things season 5

In an interview with Variety, Netflix’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos revealed that “there won’t be a dry eye” when asked to describe the final season of Stranger Things. Sarandos expressed that he already knows what route the final season will take and teased that fans will be in for a “thrill ride” when the series returns. Although Sarandos didn’t, unfortunately, reveal anything to do with the show’s characters or leave a trail of breadcrumbs that might hint at what’s in store, he did go on to talk about its successful universe and that the stage show will be coming to Broadway in the next few months.

“I think Stranger Things is a big universe. You see it in novelizations of the story and the characters, you see it in consumer products, you see it in the live stage show, which is a prequel to Stranger Things, which is playing hugely successfully on the West End now, and it’s going to be opening on Broadway in a few months.”

Stranger Things season 5 has produced a slew of wild and also pretty decent theories since the dramatic season 4 ended over 2 years ago. Of course, most fans’ concerns are drawn toward who will survive Stranger Things season 5. Some of the characters that might meet their end more than others are the likes of Hopper (David Harbour), Joyce (Winona Ryder), or Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), which will no doubt tear the hearts out of its viewers. There’s also speculation that Will Byers’ darkest and most powerful secrets will finally be brought to the surface once and for all.

Fans have also pointed out that long-time couple Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers should get their very own story arc this time around in Season 5. The hope is that Jonathan might become more involved in his brother’s struggles or at least team up with Eleven for more dramatic showdowns. Either way, here’s hoping fans get a more detailed trailer of what’s in store for Stranger Things season 5 soon.

Season 5 of Stranger Things is slated to come out on Netflix at some stage this year.
