It’s been five years since Mount and Blade Bannerlord launched. In the time since, the strategy and action RPG hybrid has remained one of the best choices for players looking to blend the management aspects of medieval games like Crusader Kings 3 or Manor Lords with the more direct action of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 or Chivalry 2. Now, in a surprising new announcement, creator TaleWorlds Entertainment has just revealed a massive new DLC for Bannerlord: The Viking-inspired War Sails.

Mount and Blade Bannerlord‘s new War Sails expansion looks to introduce a brand-new faction, game mechanics, and regions to explore for fans of the medieval game to dig into. It’s all themed around the Viking reminiscent Nords, a seagoing society that hails from the Northern Kingdom.

As expected, the introduction of the Nords brings large additions with it. Players will be able to explore the Northern Kingdom’s harsh, pseudo-Scandinavian landscape, visiting its communities to participate in typical Mount and Blade role-playing activities, like trade, conversation, and, of course, military confrontation, either as ally or enemy of these settlements. The real highlight of War Sails looks to be its new naval warfare systems. Players will be able to fight at sea, ramming, immobilizing, or boarding enemy vessels; customizing their own ships to meet their needs; and aiding sieges by setting up naval blockades.

To ensure War Sails integrates neatly into Bannerlord’s base game, the Nords will be present not just as a new faction in their own added region, but also through cultural and military influences like new hairstyles, weapons, and more. These additions will be introduced, too, through a questline that eases players into new mechanics and systems.
