Marvel Rivals Devs Don’t Want Future Roster Additions To “Have The Same Silhouette”

Marvel Rivals Devs Don't Want Future Roster Additions To "Have The Same Silhouette"

Summary

  • Marvel Rivals has a diverse roster, blending popular characters with fringe picks like Jeff the Land Shark and Luna Snow.
  • It’s refreshing to see, and something that will continue going forward, according to executive producer Danny Koo.
  • There are exceptions though, as Koo says that he wants the game’s roster to be “distinct” from each other, and wants characters to have unique silhouettes.

Marvel Rivals has a pretty good roster full of household names, complimented by a sprinkling of really out their picks that give the whole thing a bit more flavour. You have the likes of Iron Man, Spider-Man, Starlord fighting in the same game as Luna Snow, Squirrel Girl, and Jeff the Land Shark, who have all entered the mainstream thanks to their inclusions.

Even the game’s mascot, Galacta, is a good example of this, what with her being the daughter of the more popular Galactus, who first appeared in Marvel comics back in 2009. The inclusion of more fringe characters from the Marvel universe has been pretty refreshing, and it’s a tactic that doesn’t look set to change any time soon.

Marvel Rivals Really Doesn’t Need Crossovers

There’s enough content to mine in Marvel alone. Why look elsewhere?

Speaking with PC Gamer, Marvel Rivals executive producer Danny Koo discussed potential new additions to the game’s roster, and which heroes/villains could make the cut. With Marvel being such a massive franchise with a huge history of characters to choose from, almost everyone has their personal list of who should make the cut, and Koo says that “nothing is out of the question for now.”

Marvel Rivals Characters Need Unique “Silhouettes”

Venom in Marvel Rivals.

However, it does seem like the developers at NetEase do have a few stipulations for who would make a good character. Koo says that one of the main focuses when deciding characters is to make them “distinct” from each other:

“For example, Hulk and Red Hulk roughly have the same silhouette, so we may not want to do that one. Their [abilities] have to be as distinct as well because we have all kinds of players.”

It’s interesting that Koo uses Red Hulk as an example, as that means we can get a good idea of characters that won’t be added. If Red Hulk is the bar, that means the likes of US Agent and War Machine are almost definitely off the table too. It could also mean that characters like Carnage and Miles Morales may not be feasible either, as they have very similar silhouettes to Venom and Spider-Man.

Then again, you could easily make another completely unique moveset for Miles Morales, thanks to his Venom powers and invisibility. We’ll have to wait and see what NetEase cooks up, but it seems like we can safely say that if there’s a character out there already very similar to someone in the Marvel Rivals roster, chances are you won’t see them added. There’s always skins though, right?
