Since Assassin’s Creed: Shadows has two protagonists and lots of different weapons, there are various skill trees for you to progress through. However, the skills you can unlock go beyond the basic skills in each of the trees. There is a Mastery system in the game too.

Assassin’s Creed: Best Assassinations In The Franchise
Enacting successful assassinations on villainous characters is an iconic aspect to the Assassin’s Creed franchise, and here are the best ones.
As you play through the game, you earn Mastery Points. They are Assassin’s Creed: Shadows’ equivalent of skill points and are used to unlock skills specific to weapons and ways of playing. Then, the more you spend, you’ll unlock additional stat boosts.
Skill Mastery, Explained
Skill Mastery is an additional stat boost that you unlock as you spend Mastery Points on skills in each category, for each character.
For example, if you spend Mastery Points on skills in Naoe’s Katana skill tree, those points will go towards unlocking the next tier of the Mastery Skill. Each tree has an individual Mastery Skill, each with a point spent requirement.
Once you’ve spent enough Mastery Points to unlock the next tier of the Mastery Skill, it will automatically unlock and you’ll be given the stat boost it offers.
You can look at the larger skill icon at the bottom of each tree to see what the category’s Mastery Skill buff is, and how many points you are away from the next tier.
