How To Get The Chest In Ancient Tomb Of Nanjo In Assassin's Creed Shadows

While playing Assassin’s Creed Shadows, most of your time will either be spent traveling from one place to another or stealthing your way through a quest while constantly assassinating targets. However, this isn’t even the most challenging part of the game as you can easily work your way around them.

You already know there will be a card game here, right?

You can find various Kofun scattered around the world as you explore, and these pose a bigger challenge as you have to navigate your way through the dark. The Ancient Tomb of Nanjo is one of them, and here’s how you can easily get past it.

Where To Find Ancient Tomb Of Nanjo

Assassin's Creed Shadows Ancient Tomb of Nanjo location on the map.

When you get past the prologue of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you’ll start your journey in the Izumi Settsu province where you’ll do your first couple of Shinbakufu assassinations. Once you do that, the game will take you to the next province called Yamashiro, though you can get here even before the main story allows.

You can spot the Yamazaki city at the southern edge of Yamashiro, followed by Shoryuji just above it. You’ll find the Ancient Tomb of Nanjo to the northwest of Shoryuji near Eagle’s Nest Kakurega. It’ll appear as a “?” in the area when you activate nearby viewpoints.

Once you get to the tomb, you can easily enter it by going down the stairs. However, you can only do this with Naoe as Yasuke won’t fit through the gap.

How To Beat Ancient Tomb Of Nanjo

Assassin's Creed Shadows Naoe entering Ancient Tomb of Nanjo.

As soon as you enter the Ancient Tomb of Nanjo, you’ll see the first chest on your left, which will already give you a decent reward. However, this isn’t the main chest that you’re here for. To get the legendary chest, you’ll have to follow these steps and not get lost in the darkness:

  • After getting the first chest, move to the lit-up area in front and jump down, where you’ll see a path forward. Keep following this path until you reach an area with two stairs leading down on either side.

Go down these stairs and head to the path on your right. You’ll reach an edge here with multiple clay statues on either side. You can jump down from this edge.

  • Upon jumping down and getting the chest on the right, you have to go down the slide on your right. The left path is a red herring, but if you went there, you can jump on the middle pillar in the next room and then onto the textured wall.

Follow the normal path from here and you’ll slide down two more times to reach the same room with two staircases mentioned above.

While going through this tomb, it’s important to light up all the mini lanterns you see on the way.

These will help you keep track of the path you’ve already been to so that you know when you’re going in circles.

  • While taking the path on the right and moving forward, you’ll reach a room where you can jump on two pillars and reach the edge on the other side. Go forward here and jump down.

At the bottom, you’ll see a small gap at the bottom of the wall near the surface beside the water. Use this gap to move forward.

  • Past this gap, you’ll see another couple of staircases. Go up here and head inside the little gap with the lantern, and then you can turn right to see a path forward. When you reach another open area, don’t jump in the water.

Instead, go to the right edge of this platform and you can jump forward on a textured wall to reach the upper area. Jump down in the next part to get another chest.

  • Assassin's Creed Shadows Ancient Tomb of Nanjo path nine.
  • You’ll have two paths down here again, and you can go to the path in the front. After sliding down this path and reaching an open area, jump on the pillar to your right and then cross the broken bridge.

You can squeeze through another gap here to get the second rare chest of this tomb. Squeeze back out of the area after and grapple on the right edge to get to the next platform.

You have multiple instances in this tomb where you have to select one of the two paths, and you get a hint about it from the statues above.

The path with two horses and a lantern in the middle is the correct one.

  • Assassin's Creed Shadows Ancient Tomb of Nanjo path ten.
  • After grappling and reaching another area with water, jump on the pillar on your right and then you’ll see some stuck-out bits on the wall to your left. Use these to climb up.

Move forward and jump down to get your third rare chest. After getting this chest, go down the left path, which is the one right beside it.

  • Assassin's Creed Shadows Ancient Tomb of Nanjo path eleven.
  • Follow this path and go through the hole at the bottom of the wall to move forward. In the next open area, you’ll see some water with pillars in it. Jump on the second pillar farther away and you can grapple to the next platform.

From here, you can simply follow the path and you’ll reach the legendary chest.

After getting the legendary chest, you’ll see a path behind it that’ll lead you out of the tomb. Once you move forward in this path, you can jump down into the water and keep moving forward until you get greeted by a dead end. In this area, jump on the pillar extending upward first.

When you’re on top of the pillar, you’ll get the option to grapple up. Go up until you see the exit towards the eastern direction and you can then toggle swing. You can see the button to do that at the bottom of your screen. This will let you move back and forth on your grapple, letting you land on the upper platform.

Once you’ve landed up here, you can simply walk out of the main entrance and exit the tomb.

Keep in mind that you can’t fast travel from here, so the only way to go back out is the one mentioned above.

Ancient Tomb Of Nanjo Rewards

Assassin's Creed Shadows getting rewards from legendary chest in Ancient Tomb of Nanjo.

As you enter the Ancient Tomb of Nanjo and get the first chest on your left, you’ll get a Bloody Katana of Bravery, which is a blue rarity Katana for Naoe. You can get various other chests on your path, and their rewards are random as they reset with each season reset.

When you open a couple of rare chests in the tomb, you can either get weapons or low-rarity engravings. These also reset with the season.

Vigilant Teppo of Breaching is another reward that you can get from the second rare chest mentioned above.

From the third rare chest in this tomb, you can get the Clandestine Tanto of Soaring. The legendary chest in this kofun will give you Yukimitsu’s Revenge Legendary Tanto and Vulnerable to Affliction engraving. This makes the enemies with afflictions vulnerable, which makes them glow yellow and take more damage.
